The Glen Beach Cliff Walk is a moderate hike both in difficulty and length. Out and back it’s roughly 5km and while there’s no really difficult climbs, it does hug the cliff face a lot of the way with exposed cliff edges, so steady footing is needed for carefuls sake. It’s best to walk in single file throughout the walk.

Depending on what path you take the walk can range from 3.7km to 5.3km. The official 3.7km follows a green arrowed trail and loops back along the same route. This is a Google maps guided map to help you with that, but it is hard to lose the trail. The unofficial route leaves the green trail, explores some lighthouses and follows a country and secondary road back to the car park. This is that map from Alltrails.

Getting to the Glen Beach Cliff Walk

The Glen Beach Cliff Walk is serviced by its own car park. For the Dublin day-trippers, Glen Beach is 52 kilometres from the city, making it one of the most accessible in Ireland. It’s not one for public transport unless you want to add the walk from Wicklow town to your hike. Not that I’m saying that’s a bad idea but from Wicklow Train Station its 2.8km to the car park. That said Wicklow is a pleasant town with a few decent places to grab lunch and a couple of excellent attractions.

First steps on the Glen Beach Cliff Walk

Even from the car park the scenery is great, reaching over greenery to the Irish Sea. On a bright blue day, it’s stunning. The trail begins at the free car park and descends a few flights of stairs and footpaths past the Glen View Golf Course. Passing through an archway brings us to our location that’s worthy of standing and staring, or languishing a little. The beach which gives the trail its name is tiny. It’s not a sandy beach, it’s better, covered in smooth multicoloured stones and pebbles.

From here our cliff walk begins. It’s a series of mild climbs and drops each presenting a different view of this fabulous stretch of coastline. Keep an eye towards the Irish Sea as you walk, as some of the walks famed inhabitants can be seen in these early stretches. There’s a distinct feeling that they are in fact the ones doing the watching, as the bobbing heads are always directed towards land. That song by Rockwell sprang to mind as we walked. I may have even (badly) sang a few lines.

The Grey Seals

A pod of Grey Seals are the Glen Beach Cliff Walks best draw. Before approaching the beaches where the Grey Seals nest, a number of warnings are shared and these must be adhered to. For your safety as much as that of the seals. They can give a good bite if stressed. During the months of August to April the beach must not be entered as stipulated by the Wildlife Act 1976. Pups are often left on land as their mothers hunt for fish. Approaching pups or allowing dogs to do so can cause a Grey Seal mother to abandon their young. Dogs must be kept on a leash for this walk!

The good news is there is an elevated position that allows you to see the seals without disturbing them. As you walk, you will see a tiny beach with similar warnings, though rarely there are any seals here. Continue through the small gorge that lies beyond, and you’ll be at the approach to the bigger beach known as Lime Kiln Bay. To the left lies a trial up onto a headland. This rises above the beach and gives a birds eye view down onto the seals which hopefully are resting below. Our visit in January 2022 hit the jackpot, with a pod of about 30 seals chillin’ on the beach. Jackpot!

When observing take care not to disturb even from above. This is a natural wonder to preserve for others and the particular highlight of the stunning Glen Beach cliff walk.

Returning to the entrance to the beach, the trail continues onwards. This section now is alive with birdlife. We spotted rock pipits, cormorants, black guillemots, greater whitethroats, oystercatchers, starlings, without any effort. Anyone dedicated to bird watching could have lots more success as kittiwakes, shags, razor bills, peregrine falcons, stonechats, and linnets are all common here.

The Lighthouses

The walk reaches its turning point as a lighthouse looms into view. While only one is visible from the trail, there are in fact three together here. The one that’s visible is the Old Wicklow Head Lighthouse, whose light housing days are now over. It’s definitely the prettiest of the three, built in 1781. As you reach the gates you’ll see a private property sign, as the area is only open to registered guests. Judging by Google and Alltrails reviews that doesn’t stop most people walking, as there are plenty of photos of all three.

The best news yet- you can stay the night there. They have a minimum stay policy of 2 nights starting from €644 but in this location you’ll want to stay the two. The lighthouse has 6 rooms, including 2 bedrooms so you can bring some friends along. Reading up on it, there are 109 steps up to the kitchen, so I recommend you avoid serving a 6 course meal. To book the Old Wicklow Head Lighthouse a visit to the Irish Landmark Trust website is required. To my knowledge it is the only lighthouse in Ireland, where you can stay within the actual lighthouse.

We followed the official trail as mentioned earlier back to the car park. Keep an eye out here for some buildings of archaeological significance. There is the ruins of an old church, a lime kiln where some prehistoric flints were found, and a holy well.

Back to Wicklow Town- Where to eat and what to do?

I don’t know about you but walking makes me hungry. Wicklow Town has plenty of options before you head back on your way, or continue exploring. Fitzwilliam Square has some cafes and an ice cream shop and some communal outdoor seating if the weather is decent. We ate at the imaginatively tilted The Coffee Shop. Thankfully the food was a little more thoughtful. Alternatively there’s the Port. Leitrim Place hosts the Grey Dog Cafe where quality tacos and pizza can be got. My kind of food after sport such as hiking.

You might be full to the brim, but don’t go fleeing home yet. Wicklow Gaol is the town’s top attraction and one the 25 most haunted places in Ireland in my book. Visiting is an experience, with a fully interactive tour exploring the hardships of those imprisoned here over two centuries. For those with the prerequisite guts, hang around and do the night tour.

Just out from town is Black Castle. This ruin has glorious views up and down the coast. The castle itself didn’t last long, built in the 12th century, and destroyed in the 14th, but it’s not really the attraction here. Just south of it is a wonderful little beach too called Travelahawk Beach. Reputedly St Patrick tried to land here. It was also a filming location for the TV show Vikings.

Back in town the quay’s around the River Vartry have some excellent street art, depicting Vikings. The Quays aren’t the busiest but it is the nicest part of the town for a walk.

Croagh Patrick

Known as Ireland’s holy mountain, Croagh Patrick has been the site of pilgrimages long before St Patrick spent 40 days of Lent here, 1600 odd years ago. Climbing Croagh Patrick is a spiritual experience, even for those without faith. Unlike the other hikes on this article, Croagh Patrick is climbed by people of all ages, and fitnesses. Some climb it having never climbed a mountain in their life. The more devout, and those seeking divine help, often climb it barefoot.

Despite that, the hike up Croagh Patrick is one that should be considered difficult. The out and back route to the top is some 7.6 kilometres, with half of it over scree-covered ground. From the car park, it’s essentially a constant climb all the way to the top, with a total elevation gain of 750 metres. The average climb time is around 3 hours. Sounds tough, but it’s so worth it. The views over Clew Bay are some of the best Ireland can offer.

Croagh Patrick is 92 kilometres from the nearest city of Galway but is closer to Westport, a lively town that’s perfect as a base. It’s only an 8 kilometre ride on bus 450 from there to Croagh Patrick.

The Spinc Glendalough

Glendalough offers some of the most popular hiking in the country. Set in a glacial valley with two beautiful lakes, it is also the location of one of Ireland’s most famous monasteries dating back over 1000 years. The surrounding Wicklow Mountains have a huge amount of hiking trails, but the best of the lot is the Spinc trail. This ridge trail climbs from the valley floor, past a river, woodland, and waterfalls, before opening out on the mountain above. Far below the two lakes provide a simply sumptuous backdrop for your photos.

From there the trail wanders for a total distance of 10 kilometres, passing into the Glenealo Valley, and then tracking the route of the river of the same name. There’s more to see on this way too, in the ruins of an old miners village. It was so remote the miners called it Van Diemen’s Land; the old name for Tasmania. You might even spot some of the now feral goats that they left behind when the mines closed. The walk finishes with a peaceful stroll past Glendalough’s Upper Lake.

The Spinc Glendalough is a loop trail that is rated as moderate with an elevation gain of 450 metres. Most of this is in a series of switchbacks at the outset. There is some rough terrain when descending from the Glenealo Valley, but it’s all manageable with a decent fitness level. The smart move after the hike is to get lunch in the Wicklow Heather in Laragh, which serves the best food in the area.

Howth Cliff

Howth Cliff Walk is perfect for a spontaneous hike during your visit to the Irish capital. It is located on the Howth Peninsula, north of Dublin. In addition to the trail, the peninsula is also home to a variety of attractions and restaurants.

How to get to the Howth Peninsula?

There is a bus line between Dublin and Howth. The trip takes 30 minutes.

The Cliff Path takes you along the beautiful Irish cliffs. Some caution is advised in windy weather and proper clothing should be worn. If you watch the sea carefully during the trail, you may be lucky enough to see seals. The Cliff Path is particularly beginner-friendly and navigation is very easy thanks to the many markings. You must always follow the green arrows. For about half of the hike, you walk along the coast until the path leads inland. After about an hour you will be on a small hill and you can enjoy a beautiful view from there.

It is also recommended to have a small picnic here. The second half of the hike leads through the upper settlements of Howth over different paths back down to the harbor where you started. If you are still a beginner, it is recommended to inform yourself about the right equipment before a longer hike. But even experienced hikers will find useful information on hiking packing lists.

Sheeps Head Hike, West Cork

Your hike begins in the colorful town of Bantry, which is approximately a 90-minute drive from Cork City.  Bantry is serviced by the 236 bus route from Cork City.

 The Sheeps Head Way is part of the Wild Atlantic Way tourist route in Ireland, often described as ‘one of the most scenic routes in the world’. The Sheeps Head is known for its stunning views of Mizen head and the Beara peninsula. If you’re lucky you may even spot dolphins and whales in the Atlantic ocean below.

 To walk the whole walk will take 6 days as it’s a huge 93 km in total. It is rated as moderate.  You can choose to hike one of the shorter loop walks on this trail if you’re short on time. The most popular loop walk is The Lighthouse Loop and at just 4 km and should take most walkers 2 hours to complete. It is rated as moderate and this coastal route is one of the most scenic loop trails.

 The longer 93 km route takes in stunning sights such as Mealagh Valley, Gougane Barra and the very photogenic Sheeps Head Lighthouse.

 The terrain of the Sheep’s Head Way is very varied; you will encounter wide  grassy paths, old boreens, several uphill climbs as well as quiet country roads. Plus, you’re sure to come across some more unique sights such as an old copper mine, a blowhole, stone circles, and several church ruins if you choose the longer walking route.

Carrauntoohil

At 1,038 masl, Carrauntoohil is the highest peak in Ireland that ensures that the one who decides to stand on its top will have unspoiled views all around the MacGillycuddy’s Reek range and County Kerry.

There are various paths to its top. However, the one and most popular is via Devil’s Ladder. You could either return the same way or alternatively get back via Brother O’Shea Path. This will make it a circular walk and allows you to get back to the same place you started the walk from.

This circular 13 km long route starts at Cronin’s Yard, just outside of Killarney (about an hour and a half’s drive from Cork). It is a medium/hard hike, depends on your abilities and the weather conditions. The total elevation gain for the whole route is 957 meters and you should allow about 7 hours to complete it.

Both paths provide different experiences and views. Devil’s Ladder has a reputation of being more difficult than Brother O’Shea Gully actually the latter is more dramatic and trickier to navigate. The difficulty of Devil’s Ladder lays in the fact that it’s steep and the path is very eroded, requiring special care — especially when wet.

Make sure you go prepared as the weather can change rapidly. Enjoy the walk and fantastic views from Ireland’s rooftop.

Doolin to Hags Head on the Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher are located on the West Coast of Ireland in County Clare, along the Wild Atlantic Way. The Cliffs of Moher are one of the most popular sites in all of Ireland. With more than 1 million visitors flocking to take in the views of the rugged cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean.

Not only do the cliffs of Moher offer beautiful views and make it to the top of many travelers bucket lists it is also part of one of the best hikes in Ireland.

As an alternate way of reaching the Cliffs of Moher and the hags head, many travelers choose to hike the 14km from the small towns of Doolin or Liscannor to the Hags Head, via the visitors center.

In the regular hiking sense, the hike is relatively easy and most stretches of the path are flat. However, the path can be uneven at times and you are hiking close to the cliff edge (214m in some places!) The path is exposed to the elements and the weather can be unpredictable. The wind and the rain can make the hike challenging and unpleasant so, if you are in Doolin or Liscannor for a few days check the weather and plan ahead.

Once you have hiked the 14km to the Hags Head you can either hike back or take the shuttle bus back to town.

Despite the challenges the scenery makes it worth it. Although the hike is suggested to take around 5 to 6 hours, plan for a little longer as the photo stops really do add up!

Dun Aonghasa in the Aran Islands

Off the west coast of Ireland and in the icy waters of the Atlantic lie the mysterious and rocky Aran Islands. Consisting of 3 small islands, the Aran Islands are remote, mildly inhabited, and surrounded in ancient history. The largest of the 3 islands, Inishmore, has a prehistoric stone fort called Dun Aonghasa, located at the peak of the island, overlooking the cliffs into the sea below. 

Almost all visitors to Inishmore embark on the 1.3 mile out and back trail that leads to the infamous fort. Called the Dun Aonghasa hike, it involves a 298 foot gain in elevation and a moderate level of difficulty. The trail is clearly marked by a dirt path and steps made from slabs of stone.

Inishmore and the other Aran Islands are located off the coast Galway Bay, making it convenient to catch a 30-45 minute ferry from Rossaveel or Doolin. Considering the travel and hiking conditions are dependent upon weather conditions, it is important to plan and book ahead of time. Spring and summer are the best times to visit in hopes of ideal weather, and, while it’s possible to catch a ferry in the winter, visitors should expect the waters to be choppy, and there to be some heavy flooding on the island. 

Once hikers reach the summit of the trail, they are faced with the historical remains of Dun Aonghasa, including stone doorway frames, and a massive stone outline of what once was the base of the walls. Peering out over the sheer drop of the cliff face while surrounded by an ancient fort dating back to 1100 BC is what makes the Dun Aonghasa hike one of the best hikes in Ireland. 

Carrick A Rede

The Carrick-a-Rede hike in Ballycastle begins at the Carrick-a-Rede and Larrybane parking site; however, there is a longer route you can take that starts at Harbour Road, Ballintoy.

There is a reception hut at the parking spot where you will need to purchase tickets if you want to cross the rope bridge; the hike is free. The walk from the parking site to the rope bridge is relatively easy to get to the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, with slight elevations in a few places.

On the way to the bridge, you will find colourful suspended boats, the Atlantic Ocean on your left, and you’ll also be able to see islands such as Rathlin Island on a clear day.  You can use the many telescopes present on the walk to view these as well.

To the right, you’ll find farmlands with numerous sheep grazing away and sometimes staring at you while you pass by.

On the walk, you’ll also find numerous steps cut out to make it easier. The rope bridge swings slightly while you cross it, making it quite exciting to cross it over to Carrick-a-rede island, where fisherman came to catch migrating salmon.

The walk from the parking spot is about 2 kilometres and takes about 30 minutes, one-way.
From Harbour Road, it is about 4 kilometres and takes about 45-50 minutes.

The bridge is about 15 minutes away by drive from the Giant’s causeway, making it a great area to explore, from Belfast the hike is about an hour away by car. 

Diamond Hill

“What better way to soak up the views of Connemara, than by tackling Diamond Hill hike? This walk lies on the northern edge of Connemara National Park, with the car park right on the outskirts of Letterfrack – a vibrant village famous for its traditional Irish music.

Diamond Hill stands at 445 m, so it’s by no means the highest hike in Ireland. But what it lacks in height, it makes up for with outstanding scenery. 

The longest of the 4 available trails is 3.7 km and is certainly one of the most rewarding things to do in Connemara. Overall, the hike is moderate in difficulty, but with a steep unsteady surface towards the top, it would not be suitable for those with mobility issues. However, the lower two trails would be considered easy. One is a 0.5 km trail through the woods and the other, a 1.5 km loop around the area. 

While it shouldn’t take too long, distractions caused by the panoramic views of Galway are enough to stop you in your tracks – multiple times! Leave yourself at least three hours to do the hike at a steady pace, leaving time to stop and admire the area.”

Clare island Hiking

The glorious Clare Island lies four miles off the Mayo coast marking the entrance to Clew Bay and is a great place for hiking while uninterrupted by traffic or crowds.  Access to the island is from Roonagh Pier and you can start hiking as soon as you step off the ferry.   There are two signposted loop walks on Clare Island – one long and one short.   The short loop takes just over an hour to hike the 3 kilometres loop and is suitable for all hikers with an elevation gain of just 90 metres over the whole distance. 

The longer loop is a little more difficult in terms of distance and elevation and will take up to 3 hours to hike the 8 kilometres with an elevation gain of about 140 metres.  Both these trails include walking on the tarmac road and green tracks.  There are few cars here on Clare Island and you’re unlikely to meet much if any road traffic at all.  For those who wish to hike a little further, extend the longer loop out to the seabird cliffs and the Signal Tower, Knockmore and the towering cliffs there.   You’ll add another 4 kilometres to your round trip by doing this. 

You can pick up food and drink at the community centre near the harbour before starting your hike, or stop at the store en route to the Signal Tower.  Alternatively, it’s recommended to carry a picnic and filter water bottle.  What makes this one of the best hikes in Ireland is that you’ll actually get to enjoy the countryside and wildlife without interruption.  Be sure to make time to see Granuile’s Castle at the harbour before leaving the island. 

Skellig Michael

One of the most striking hikes in Ireland is the dramatic ascent of the island, Skellig Michael. Sixth Century monks, desiring lives of solitude and contemplation, established a small colony here. They chose a location at the end of the known world that was very difficult to reach. The monks created breathtaking stairways in the steep hillside and built unique beehive huts near the top. This rich history eventually established it as one of the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Ireland. The island is also a delightful nesting ground for puffins, gannets, and other waterfowl.

Indeed, the views are so unique that it is the fitting setting for Luke Skywalker’s otherworldly retreat in, The Force Awakens. Curious hikers will want to learn more before their trip.

Skellig Michael remains difficult to reach for the modern hiker and advanced planning is essential. Only 180 people are allowed on the site each day, and all trips are weather-dependent. Book a tour with one of the authorized boat companies at least one month in advance (preferably much longer). Trips last about 6 hours with 2.5 hours for your hike and cost around €100. Almost all boats leave around 9:00 am out of the charming seaside town of Portmagee.

Most of the 715-foot elevation gain is made on the 640 ancient, steep, rock-hewn steps created by the monks. The hike is only one mile, but it is considered moderate because of the steepness and the danger.  It is only recommended for children over 12 and for hikers in relatively good health who aren’t afraid of heights since people have died on this hike.

Hikers who make the journey are treated to unparalleled views of the island, nearby Little Skellig, beehive huts, and often hundreds of nesting Puffins. It is easily one of the most astounding hikes in the country and is definitely worth the extra effort. 

Torc Mountain

Torc Mountain is a 7.1 kilometre moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland that features beautiful wildflowers and the rare Torc butterfly. The trail can be hiked year-round and is one of the best places for hiking in the British Isles. It’s great for bird watching with nature enthusiasts of all levels being able to enjoy its beauty.

The Torc Mountain and Torc Waterfall comprise a lovely forest path within Killarney National Park, which offers stunning views that overlook the beloved Killarney Lakes. Sweeping you past the ever-beautiful Torc Waterfall, you’ll continue on up the mountain through quiet moss-covered forests and past rushing streams. Part of Kerry Way trail is dotted with Irish mythology which makes sense as in Irish torcs means ‘boars’

Torc Mountain Path is dotted with Irish mythology. In Irish, torc means ‘boar’ and the mountain’s name comes from a magical boar that was killed by an Irish hero – Finn McCool – who also created the Giant’s Causeway. 

The hike up to the summit of Torc Mountain is 4.6 miles or 7.5 km long which will take about 2 hours 45 minutes each way if you stop for photo breaks at any point on your journey; it becomes even more enjoyable when listening to water cascading down Torcs Waterfall during this time as well.

Slieve Donard

There are certainly a lot of things to do in Northern Ireland, but hiking Slieve Donard might just be one of the best. It is the region’s highest mountain at 850 metres tall and looms above the Mourne Mountains, Newcastle, and the Irish Sea.

The Mournes are a gorgeous mountain range in County Down, with Slieve Donard as the tallest and most popular mountain to hike. With a number of waterfalls along the way and the magical view on top, it’s definitely worth it.

The hike itself is only 9.2 km from the car park to the summit and back, which would take around 4-5 hours. The real challenge is in the incline that becomes quite steep in places, so you could consider this moderate to hard. Anyone with a basic fitness level would be able to do it, although not without getting in a good workout.

As you hike up Slieve Donard, look out for the impressive Mourne Wall. This 1.5m granite stone wall stretches out for 35 kilometres over 15 mountains! Completed in 1922, it was built to confine the catchment area and keep out farm animals. Walking this is another challenge in itself and will take around 9 hours.

The normal route starts from Newcastle, or the Donard Park car park to be exact. From here, just follow the path along and across the Glen River, where the adventure awaits! Or you can take the less challenging Bloody Bridge route; the car park is located about 5km before Newcastle. Another riveting history about this mountain lies in The Brandy Pad, a route that remains well-known today. Illegal cargo used to travel on horseback through this path back in the 18th century, when prohibited tobacco, wine, and spices were smuggled.

Kinbane Castle

Kinbane Castle on the Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland is a beautiful set of ruins that sits on a small headland that protrudes out into the Atlantic Ocean. This is a short but spectacular hike and it is one of the hidden gems of the North Coast. While most people know of the Giants Causeway and Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge, Kinbane Castle is much lesser-known and this means that it never gets too busy.

The route down to Kinbane Castle is along a steep set of stairs that are cut into the edge of the cliff. Once you reach the bottom of the stairs you can walk out along the headland and explore what is left of the castle ruins. From the castle, you also get amazing views out to Rathlin Island and Dunagregor Iron Age fort.

The dramatic ruins of Kinbane Castle, built in 1547 by Colla MacDonnell, are perched right on the edge of the limestone headland and are absolutely beautiful. A narrow earth path will take you to the end of the headland where you can look back and see the castle with the lush green coastline towering above.

The hike back up the stairs is quite steep but not too difficult as it isn’t that long and I would rate it on the easy side of moderate due to the steps. This short hike is only 1 kilometre roundtrip, has 70 metres of elevation gain, and with some time spent exploring the castle ruins and the headland, should only take 45 minutes.

Slieve League

Found in the fairly remote parts of County Donegal, along the famous Wild Atlantic Way, Slieve League is famous for its rather magnificent views of some of the tallest cliffs in all of Ireland. The hike itself isn’t overly challenging at just 601 meters (1,972ft) at its highest elevation, but the sea views are unbeatable and there are many walks to cover in the area. At the furthest points, the trail is 2.8 kilometres in length and there are many ways to approach the hike with some lesser-known than others.

For a beginner, it would probably be best to drive straight to the upper car park itself which is found right next to the cliff views. However, many visitors do not realise this as an option as there is a gate blocking the way and most people will start out at the lower car park which adds at least 30-minutes to the overall hike. Otherwise, this gate is only to stop the local sheep from escaping and it’s simple to just open and pass the gates to continue to drive to the cliffs.

For those planning to stay the night, there is a handy guesthouse (Slieve League B&B) which is within walking distance of the cliffs, otherwise, the nearest town would be Killybegs. Despite being one of Ireland’s most scenic attractions Slieve League is free for entry year-round although there are always rumours that this may change.

The walk from Sandymount out into Dublin Bay, treats the walker to superb views, first of the city, then south along the coast to Dún laoghaire. As we reach the wall, the views turn north, and towards the Howth Peninsula. It’s a great place to watch ships and ferries passing on their way into Dublin city, and there’s nowhere better when a huge cruise ship pulls into town. Finally, with its easterly pointing direction, the south wall, has one of Dublin’s best sunrises. Do you need any more reasons to visit?

Helpful information for the Great South Wall and Poolbeg Lighthouse Walk

• The Poolbeg Lighthouse walk is 11km in length from Sandymount.
• A shorter 2 km route is possible from Pigeon House Road.
• The Poolbeg Lighthouse was built in 1768 along with the Great South Wall
• When the Great South Wall was built, it was the longest in the world. It is still one of the longest in Europe.
• The wall was built as there was a severe problem with silting in Dublin Bay.
• The full route is 11 km, although the shorter route is only 2 km long.
• It’s flat ground all the way, so not particularly strenuous and you should complete the out-and-back walk in 2 1/2 hours.
• There are public toilets at the second car park along Sandymount Strand, near the martello tower.
• Traffic on Sandymount Strand is limited to Southbound traffic only from March to October.
• Hiking boots are not needed. but waterproof trainers can be handy especially in winter or after heavy rainfall.
• Bring water, snacks, a waterproof jacket (it is Ireland), a hat and sunscreen. The wind can be much stronger on the South Wall so bring a pullover even on a warm day.
• The best months to take the walk are May through November, but it is a year round route. Avoid the area during heavy winds and storms though, as the sea can get quite rough.

• Remember to leave no trace.

A word of warning about the Great South Wall Walk

It’s often noted by people that some of the buildings here are an eyesore, and that there can be a less than pleasant smell. A lot of the eye sore comments relate to the Pigeon House towers, part of a power station. They don’t take history into account as these towers are widely regarded as a symbol of Dublin. They can be seen from practically anywhere in the city. The smell may relate to the Covanta Waste to Energy plant, which despite the odour is doing good for Dublin and the environment. Though there has been a problem of late at the Shelley Banks beach, with rotting seaweed building up here. It is one of those things worth noting before you head out on your walk.

Getting to Sandymount and the Poolbeg Lighthouse Walk

There are car parks all along Sandymount sea front provide plenty of parking for the walk. All are priced at €0.60 cents an hour and can be paid by cash or cards using the machines, or by text via Parking Tag. Just input you car reg, time and search for the colour code of the zone you are in on the parking meter and away you go. Very helpful if you forget to pay for parking and are already a few miles away from the car. This may have happened to someone on their last visit there. There is further parking around at the Shelley Banks, and just shy of the Great South Wall, for those looking to do a much shortened version of the walk.

It is easily to travel to by bus too. Bus Number 1 (an easy one to remember) can be boarded at from O’Connell Street Lower at the corner of Abbey Street, from Parnell Square or Pearse Street. The third last stop id Gilford Road, that leads right to the beach and the first car park on Sandymount Strand, the start of our walk. Charges are €3 for a single journey at the moment. A bus used to run all the way to the Great South Wall, but has been discontinued by Dublin Bus.

Step by Step on the Poolbeg Lighthouse Walk

Sandymount Beach

Sandymount beach is one of those rare phenomenons in that when the tide is out, you have to squint just to see the sea, but when in you wonder what happened to the beach. When out the beach is excellent for a stroll, but it’s advised to stay within 100 metres of the paths if you aren’t sure of the tides. We will only use the beach for a shortcut to get off the road and onto the path at Sean Moore park.

Sandymount Beach plays a prominent part in Ulysses, including that scandalous scene featuring Leopold Bloom that led to the book being banned in the US. At the start of our walk is sculpture called Awaiting the Mariner by Vicente Fox, a symbol of the friendship between the people of Ireland and Mexico. You may notice walls on the beach and around the walk, they are the remains of public baths from the 1880’s.

Irishtown Nature Reserve

We join the path that runs east between Sandymount Strand and Sean Moore Park. In late spring and summer this area is awash with wild flowers, in particular the natural herb Valerian. It flowers pink and it’s root is said to be good for relaxation. I can vouch for its flowers too, as the walk here is exactly that. As the path follows its course, we are treated to those views south, along the coast of Dublin. It’s particularly beautiful of a summer’s day, shimmering and hazy.

There is an option to leave the path and follow one of those that traces a route through the Irishtown nature reserve. This was once a rubbish dump for Dublin city, which thankfully was repurposed to its more appealing present state. Birdwatching is excellent here, with a huge flock of Brent geese nesting here along with skylarks, dunnocks, and stonechats. The shallow sea waters here have herons, ruddy turnstones, and common redshanks too. Whatever trail you take whether over the rough nature reserve, or on the main path, they will all meet overlooking Poolbeg Beach. Note that the reserve can be quite wet and muddy in winter.

Poolbeg beach is a naturally sheltered beach and one of the finest in the city in your authors opinion. With the iconic towers, some palm trees and golden sand its attracts surprisingly few visitors on its own merits. The grassy embankment above is the perfect place to chill and take in an elevated view of it too.

Poolbeg stacks

The Poolbeg stacks in Ringsend as they are commonly known are a pair of red and white chimneys that once formed part of the Poolbeg power generating station. They were built in the 1970’s and usage of the finally stopped in 2010. The Poolbeg Chimneys are very much a part of Dublin, and are one of the symbols of the city. At 207 metres high, they are some of the tallest structures in all of Ireland. Our walk passes by them now and meets the road to the Great South Wall. The wall extended inward beyond this point at one time, but as Dublin Port was developed, grew around it. At one point there was a hotel, a fort, and two incarnations of power stations in this area.

As we round the corner and pass the Shelley Banks, the full view of the South Wall comes into view. It’s advisable to give the Poolbeg beach here a miss, due to that aforementioned seaweed issue. But the South Wall beckons in front and the final one kilometre walk out to the lighthouse.

The Great South Wall and Poolbeg Lighthouse

With the goal finally in sight, all that’s left is the Great South Wall walk. Sometimes the wall is known as the South Bull Wall, it’s much longer than it looks, and walking on those cobblestones can be hard on the feet. Though it’s great out there; the sea air is so refreshing and the views of the Howth peninsula in County Dublin are perfect. You might be lucky to catch a ship passing into Dublin port too. The wall is one of the best places to catch a sunrise out to see in Dublin, and the sunsets back to Dublin aren’t bad either.

The wall was built in 1768 to prevent the silting up of Dublin Bay, and the earlier lighthouse at its end was a candle lighthouse in its first incarnation. It moved to oil in 1786, a wise choice I think. In 1820, the current ravishing red lighthouse was constructed. The wall by the lighthouse is often a canvas for street artists. As you reach the end, it’s a nice spot to reflect on your walk and look out to sea. Some find it an ideal place for fishing. I’m sure you’ll certainly find peace there.

The Way Back and the Perfect End

The route back to Sandymount is exactly as the route there, so no guidance is necessary. You may want to continue on to the second car park on Sandymount Strand, where there are facilities. More importantly there’s a service station across the road, and a Scoop ice cream stand. Treat yourself, you’ve just walked 11 kilometres. Sandymount village has a number of lunch options too in Brownes, Dunne & Cresenzi and Bujo Burgers.

Preface to the walks of Dublin

This post on the best places to walk in Dublin is a 30 minute read. To that extent, I’ve included an interactive table of contents to help you navigate easily to the best walks around Dublin that you are interested in. I’ve also split them geographically between those north and south of the Liffey, and a few more further south still. Personally I find the best of Dublin to be those parts outside the city center, and to that extent the walks outlines will most certainly reflect it. Best of all, the following nice walks in Dublin are all free, except for those with guided tours. We will discuss the walks in kilometres, so for those wondering, a mile is roughly 5/8 of a kilometre.

Tips for enjoying the best walks in Dublin

As with any walk suitable footwear is recommended. Be sure to take snacks and water, and as a rule for the more difficult hikes, it is prudent to notify someone of your intentions. Wear clothing that matches the Irish weather; rain is not unheard of here. Conversely, the Irish sun can have a high UV index so sunscreen and a hat are advisable to provide protection, even on cloudy days.

Public Transport in Dublin

In fact many of the walks mentioned below are accessible by public transport in Dublin. Public transport options include Dublin Bus, Luas (tram) and the Dart (Dublin’s light rail system). Luas and Dart tickets must be bought at the from machines before boarding, while bus tickets need to be bought onboard from the drivers. Luas tickets range in price from €2.10 to €3.20 depending on the number of stages. Dart single tickets cover the range of €2.25 to €3.3. Return tickets are naturally cheaper, but ensure you are returning from the same station. Buses require that you carry the exact amount in cash, but are cheaper at €1.55 to €2.50. Downloading the Dublin Bus, Irish rail and Luas apps ensure you can check timetables, costs and routes quite easily on the fly.

The Best North Side Coastal Walks in Dublin

Portrane Round Tower and Donabate beach walk

Where better to start than with a stunning cliff walk. The walk can be done as a there and back walk, or as a circular route. The shorter there and back route suits if you are driving, as a car park is located next to the Martello Tower in Portrane. Hugging the coastal path from there to Donabate Beach, there are great views of the offshore Lambay Island. Its only 2 km to the beach so the length of the walk depends on how far you venture down the kilometres long beach. The walk suits all fitness levels but is not suited for wheelchairs.

You may also be distracted by Portrane Round Tower. This curiosity dates from only 1844. It was built as a memorial by Sophie Evans to her husband George Evans, a local MP. And so remains a symbol of loss and love. An Irish Taj Mahal if you will.

The longer circular route would be more suitable to those hoping to reach the area by Dart. The nearest stop is in Donabate, and the loop heads north through the town by road to the Rogerstown Estuary, where the road then travels east before reaching Portrane beach. The 12.5 km trail follows the same path as before, and at the Corballis Cottages road connects back to Donabate. Care should be taken on the narrow roads in the area.

Skerries Beach

For a more passive walk, take the 33x bus from the Customs House to Balbriggan. Alighting in the delightful town of Skerries, follow the path back Skerries Rugby pitch, where the trail starts by entering Skerries Bay Beach. The walk has facilities en route, and is suitable for everyone. Towards the end it circles around the headland, passing another Martello Tower* and the Springers bathing area. The 3 km route finishes at the Skerries Sea Memorial, affectionately known locally as the Totem Pole. It honours those lost at sea.

The perfect reward for your efforts comes in the form of an ice cream at Storm in a Teacup, one of Ireland’s finest purveyors of frozen delights. Best enjoyed while looking across the bows of boats in Skerries harbour. Skerries has no end of quality establishments serving lunch, and in Olive Deli, one of its best cafes in this humble writers opinion.

*Wondering what all the Martello Towers are all about. 21 of these towers still stand in Ireland and were built in the early nineteenth century. With the British fearing an attack by Napoleon, a string of the towers were built to form a defensive line along the east coast known as the pale. The attack never came but we are thankfully left with the stone reminders.

Ardgillan Castle

The grounds of this 1738 castle in Balbriggan of North Dublin, are a perfect escape from the city. If you have a car that is. Set in gently sloping grounds, that curve past the castle and down to the sea, you can guarantee some of the best views around as well as a good amble.

The loop of the estate, following its internal circumference is 5 km, but perhaps more joy can be found in circling the castellated manor house at its heart. From here the walled, rose. ornamental and seasonal gardens will give colour to any route you take. To the west and the parks extremity is the wildflower meadow which changes naturally with the seasons. The large playground on the estate will be an attraction to keep younger ones in your group happy too.

Portmarnock Beach to Malahide

The last of the beach walks I’ll recommend for the moment is the one from Portmarnock Beach which can be looped or go all the way to Malahide. Featuring one of the longest and best beaches in Dublin, there is no shortage of golden sand and blue seas to look at. From the Dart station in Portmarnock, follow Station Road, before turning left onto Strand Road. Golf Links Road then leads to Portmarnock Beach Parking, which coincidentally is your starting point if driving. You should be already well warmed up from this 2 km, and the beach is only a short walk from here.

Taking the shorter route (7 km) lets you take in the whole of Portmarnock Beach and the Velvet Strand, before doubling back on the coast road towards the town of Portmarnock and the train station that lies directly beyond. The more ambitious path (10 km) follows the amazing coastline all the way to the town of Malahide. One of Dublin’s most pleasant towns, its awash with good eateries, and features the most impressive castle in the county. If you have the legs to take you that far. Failing that the Dart is on hand to take you back to the city or your car in Portmarnock.

Howth Head

As one of Dublin’s best loved walks, the Howth Head cliff walk Dublin is one not to be missed. The coastal town of Howth is exceptional in itself. Some of Dublin’s finest fish restaurants are here with Beshoffs and Aqua at opposite ends of the scale. The DART is your friend again if you aren’t driving, with the town some 30 minutes from the city centre. From Howth station, you can pass by the harbour, or stroll out to see the seals that frequent the area.

There are many routes that can be taken along the Howth cliff walk with all rated moderate. The 7 km cliff path route (following the green arrows) is the more manageable doubling back down to the town, while the 12 km and 15 km routes perform more of a full loop of Howth Head. All start beyond the harbour from Balscadden road, which (you guessed it) is near the Martello Tower. From here the path climbs by the cliffs and has some of the best views of Dublin Bay. It’s also the location where Leopold Bloom proposes in the James Joyce novel Ulysses.

To the left below is Ireland’s Eye, home to colonies of Gannets, Cormorants and Puffins. To your right the views extend all the way from the Chimney stacks at Sandymount to the Wicklow mountains. The trail often borders the cliff, but is at no times considerably dangerous. After 2 km it reaches Howth Summit, from where the trail-head leads back into the streets of the town.

The Bog of Frogs Walk

For those in this for the long haul, the cliff path extends to the Baily Lighthouse, before cutting through Howth and Deer Park Golf Courses in the area known as the Bog of Frogs. Nearby you will find Aideen’s Grave, a 4500 year old passage tomb, and the Rhododendron gardens of Howth Castle. They are the largest in Europe. It then descends to the town and your well deserved fish lunch. A well timed arrival will treat you to a delectable Dublin sunrise too, but you’ll need to be up early to catch that in the summer.

A lap of North Bull island -New Walk for 2021

North Bull Island is an island connected to the mainland by bridges off the coast of Clontarf and Raheny. It is a designated UNESCO biosphere, and bird sanctuary. The island is about 5 km long and 800 metres wide, and Dollymount Strand beach runs the entire length of it. Which makes it perfect for a walk, don’t you think? Interestingly the island is only a few centuries old, and formed after the bull wall was built to prevent silting up of Dublin Bay. That such a natural habitat was formed is a surprise, it now hosts birds such as curlews, oystercatchers and redshanks, mammals such as pygmy shrews, foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits and a small number of common lizards.

Our walk circumnavigates the island and in doing so racks up 10 km. This one will clear the cobwebs, especially with that sea air. There is parking after the wooden bridge from Clontarf, or alternatively if using public transport, take bus number 130, which conveniently runs straight to Dollymount Strand from Abbey Street. Then up we go along Dollymount Strand, one of Dublin’s longest and most beloved beaches. The walk is quite straightforward, at the end we turn into the island and return over the dunes that lie off the beach, while avoiding the two golf courses. With a it of luck, you’ll make some good wildlife sightings.

The Inland and Garden Walks of North Side Dublin

St Anne’s Park -New walk for 2021

St Anne’s park is undoubtedly one of Dublin’s most historical parks. Located between Raheny and Clontarf this was once the opulent home of the family which had the biggest impact on Dublin city. The Guinness family built St Anne’s House here in 1837, a mansion in the Italianate-style. The 240 acre park that still exists is their personal gardens turned into a city park. Sadly the house was gutted in a fire and we can’t still marvel at it. What we can see though is a some of the wonderful folly’s that are scattered all over the park. Through the heart of the park runs a majestic oak lined avenue, which is a huge focus of our walk. If you haven’t been you’ll see why. Perhaps its best feature though is the rose gardens that are in its heart.

St Anne’s Park is easily reached by taking the DART to Killester and walking to its main gates from there. An alternative are buses 31 or 32, or driving. There is an excellent route on Alltrails, that begins in this part of the park. It is roughly 6 km in length, not including your connections to the park. It suggests to follow the full length of the main avenue, but take a diversion and enter the rose gardens before rejoining. Afterwards it enters the wilder east side of the park.

It would be folly to turn back

This part is much wilder than the others and its here that the series of folly’s are found. Even their names are epic. You’ll see the Herculanean Temple, the Pompeian Water Temple of Isis at the duck pond, the Annie Lee Tower and Bridge, the Hermitage Bridge, the Yew Circle and Fountain Pool. There’s also the Roman viewing tower, which sadly has been tarnished by graffiti. It’s the closest you’ll get to Italy in these times. If you exit the walk briefly at the intersection of Watermill Road and the Clontarf Road, there’s a stunning piece of art in the form of a 10 metre high sculpted Peace Tree by artist Tommy Craggs. Its worth the diversion before you continue your circular route back through the park to the end of your walk.

Much of the park is family and wheelchair friendly, though some of the follys are found deep within the woods. There are bathroom and dining facilities at the Red Stables Market. If you are walking Saturday morning, you’ll stumble upon a farmers market here too.

National Botanic Gardens

While not necessarily a fixed walking route, there’s no denying the power of a walk in the National Botanic Gardens. The 19 hectares site contains over 20,000 plants in what is the finest garden in Dublin. With remarkable Victorian glasshouses, sculptures and sundials situated all over, its perfect if you want to stretch those legs. The gardens were founded in 1795, with some trees dating back to then. I’m not going to suggest a route, just wander at your leisure. Its not the kind of place to watch the fit bit or the clock. The gardens are reached via bus 83 from College Green, or if driving there is ample parking surrounding. Admission is without an entry free and the paths are suitable for all.

Glasnevin Cemetery

A gateway connects the botanical gardens to the adjacent Glasnevin Cemetery. I know walking cemeteries might not be perceived as everyone’s idea of a good time, but hear me out. As the first cemetery serving both Catholics and Protestants in the city, Glasnevin cemetery has quite a story to tell. It can be visited by tour or by your own volition. As the burial place of many Republican leaders, such as De Valera, Collins, and O’Connell, its brimful with history. Collins’ grave and the round tower tomb of Daniel O’Connell particularly stand out.

But as an area to walk around its fascinating. The high castellated stone walls were built to keep out body-snatchers. The sprawling area containing 1.5 million burial sites (more than the present population of the city), is a mix between Victorian monuments, stone Irish high crosses and the more modern marble ones of recent times. Its the first two that will give you your walk, with a combination of unique designs of the area and the inscribed history of a city folk long forgotten. Of course if you want to prolong your walk you could hunt for the graves of the famous folk laid to rest here. The area is fully wheel chair accessible.

Phoenix Park

As Europe’s largest enclosed city park, it’s hard to define what a walk of the Phoenix Park should entail. One that encompasses all the major sights would be great but we are talking about walks here, not a road trip. So we will propose a 7 km looped walk, one that begins with a Luas ride on the red line to Heuston Station and a walk up Parkgate Street to the entrance. If driving, it is advised to park in the visitor car parks at the Papal Cross or the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, and you can do the walk in reverse. From the Parkgate Street entrance, Chesterfield Avenue stretches for 4 km straight through the park to the Castleknock Entrance on the other side.

Begin your walk by entering the People’s Garden and continuing through the floral pleasantries here, before you cross the road and Dublin Zoo beckons in front. It’s straight from here till the centre of the park. This is marked by a roundabout, at the centre of which lies a monument with the mythical phoenix atop. But on your way pause to take a look at Aras an Uachtarain, the Irish presidents crib. If its a Saturday you can tour for free, but be sure to get the tickets at the visitor centre in the morning.

The way back

Leaving the phoenix burning in your tracks, Acres Road to your left gives you a sighting of the American Ambassadors Residence, built in 1776. Just beyond, the cross that overlooks the large field is the Papal Cross, where in 1979 Pope John Paul attracted a crowd of 1.25 million people. Nowadays you are more likely to see herds of the 600 fallow Deer that call the park home roaming here. Its best to stay away from the deer, especially during rutting season in October, when they can be aggressive. The deer have called the park home for 350 years.

Use Acres Road to access the pedestrian paths that cut through the verdant park to the south wall and the Magazine Fort. This star shaped fort was built as a gunpowder store in 1735. While not visit-able without the very infrequent guided tours, its stone walls and moat are worth seeing. Finally our walk takes Wellington Road, to the Wellington Monument. This 62 metres tall obelisk is the tallest in Europe, and commemorates the Duke of Wellington, who defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. He also was born in Ireland. It’s a short stroll from here back to the exit.

The National Famine Way to Maynooth

This is one for those with a spare day (or seven). Beginning on the Customs House Quay at the Famine Statues which are a mark of the poverty and loss that crippled the country during the 1840’s. The walk also starts in the shadows of Epic, the Irish Emigrant Museum and the Jeanie Johnston Famine Boat. While you may be inclined to visit those more, that’s not where our walk goes. Instead its a 154 km along the banks of the Royal Canal all the way to Strokestown in County Roscommon and the National Famine Museum.

Graded as easy despite the distance, it is the reverse route that a group of 1490 emigrants took in 1847, in the hope catching a ship to Canada and a life without famine. Many of course did not make it, and this walk now commemorates them. Bronze shoes line the route they took, and pilgrims now take today. You might consider this as a break free walk when we finally leave our restrictions behind. I’m not proposing the whole thing but the first stage which runs to Maynooth. It hugs the canal all the way to the Kildare town for 30 km, past a whole host of information stations on the pilgrims. You can then jump on the train back to the city. After all the walking you’ve been doing the last few months you are probably well able for this. It’s one I’m setting my sights on personally. Of course you can leave the canal (or join it) anywhere along the way, and tailor it to suit your fitness and location.

South Side Walks in Dublin

Liffey and Grand Canal Dock

This one begins on the north side and travels to the south side but passes some interesting landmarks of Dublin. I’m assuming not too many have left for Strokestown, so lets begin again at the Customs House. This 19th century building was engineered by James Gandon, who went on to design many of Dublin’s finest neoclassical buildings. Passing by the famine monument we cross the Sean O’Casey bridge over the River Liffey and down St John Rogerson’s Quay. There’s no shortage of art here, from commemorative sculptures to vibrant street art. The harp-shaped Samuel Beckett bridge is soon on our right and across the river is Dublin’s unique Convention Center, designed by the late Kevin Roche.

Grand Canal Dock

Our walk turns up Macken Street and onto Misery Hill. The impressive modern structures of the Bord Gais Energy Theater and the Marker Hotel will flank you to Grand Canal Dock. On Hanover Quay, is the studio where U2 practiced in their early days, and a future visitor centre dedicated to the band is planned for here. At the end we pass over 3 locks connecting the canal and the sea, before following a street art flanked path to Ringsend. Completing our loop we pass by Boland’s Mills, historical for being seized during the 1916 rising. After years of dereliction it is now being developed.

The figure 8 walk then returns via Macken Street to the docks, over the Samuel Beckett Bridge and back towards our start point. The bridge is one of the best places to watch a Dublin sunset, so if you time your walk right it will be the perfect end to it. The 5 km looped walk is easy and scenic, however the locks do make it not wheelchair friendly. It can also be easily linked with the Grand Canal Walk which follows.

Grand Canal walk

The Grand Canal extends from Grand Canal Dock for 132 km to the River Shannon, Ireland’s longest river. The whole canal took 47 years to complete, and before long was superseded by the railway as the preferred way to carry freight in the country. It is now used only for leisure. Don’t worry, we aren’t suggesting another long hike (though you can from Lucan if you wish), the Grand Canal Walk is a nice leisurely stroll from Grand Canal Dock, passing under bridges and by plenty of Dublin landmarks. It’s 3 km to Emmet Bridge at Harold’s Cross, but you may be tempted off along the way. Remember whatever bridge you leave the canal from, all buses lead back to the city centre.

First you’ll come across the Schoolhouse Hotel, a Victorian school that was also occupied during the 1916 rising. The affectionately named Pepper Canister Church, will distract, as will the sculptures that surround it. You may be tempted by the lights of Baggot Street, a hub for restaurants and pubs. Or a cruise on one of the barges, that will happily wine and dine you. If you need to rest take a seat by poet Patrick Kavanagh. The bench remembers him and his poem Lines written on a Seat on the Grand Canal Dublin.

Further along The Barge Pub and Portobello Bridge are two of the liveliest spots in the city on a warm summers eve. The latter is always home to a bevy of swans. The canal is one of those places that you don’t who you will meet, or what you will see, but you will always leave happier.

Dodder Walk to Bushy Park

Swapping one narrow body of water for another, takes us to The Dodder walk. This one is more natural, to the peaceful River Dodder that flows from the Wicklow mountains to the Liffey. Within the city a walkway follows the path of the river, mostly unobstructed by roads. We will start our walk after alighting bus number 11 in suburb Clonskeagh, and from here its a 5 km walk to the end of at Bushy Park. But before we board the 15 bus on the Terenure Road, there is so much to be seen. There is parking along much of the route too, particularly in Milltown.

One thing you can guarantee on this walk is wildlife sightings, from the common ducks, herons, swans, and squirrels, to the more elusive foxes and otters. At times its easy to forget that around the river the city still beats, and that you aren’t lost in the countryside. There are reminders of Dublin’s past, the Shangarry Chimney from the Old Dublin Laundry still stands proud next to Miltown’s nine-arch viaduct. From here it continues through woodland and pleasing parks, till the Ely Arch from 1771 comes into sight. This Roman triumphal arch was in fact the entrance gate to the nearby Rathfarnham Castle.

Bushy Park

Finally our walk runs alongside Bushy Park, where you may be tempted to visit, instead of staying by the river. You can access Bushy Park by taking the stepping stones across the river. Inside you’ll find an some unusual features, from the bandstand, and the beautiful Eas waterfall; to the shell house and the algae covered waters of the upper pond in Shaw’s Wood. Following the paths of the park west after visiting those will take you to the Terenure Road and your route homewards.

Irish National War Memorial Gardens

The Irish National War Memorial Gardens in Inchicore are a fitting tribute to those Irish who gave their life during World War I. Within a short ride of the city centre on bus 25a or 25b, the gardens provide a gentle 3 km looped walk, that’s suited for all. Upon entering the gardens, the paths to the left, lead you to the formal rose gardens, which are mirrored. The area is particularly efflorescent come summer, when the roses, alliums and calla lilies are in bloom.

The walk continues to the northerly part of the park, where it runs alongside the river Liffey and back towards the city. This section of the Liffey is home to Dublin’s rowing clubs. For those looking to extend, the path continues west towards the village of Chapelizod for another 2 km where the 66 or 67 bus will take you back to familiar surroundings.

Stephen’s Green & Georgian Dublin

If Dublin is famous for one thing, then its Guinness. Ok, so if Dublin is famous for another thing then its doors. Nowhere in the city are they better than in the heart of Georgian Dublin, around Merrion Square. We begin at the bottom Grafton St, in full view of Stephens Green, its shopping centre and the Fusiliers Arch. The latter is Dublin’s answer to the Arc de Triomph. We continue now along the outskirts of Stephens Green. If you are considering which walk to choose for a Dublin autumn walks, this is it. Look up, the Kildare St and University Club wins the annual competition for the best dressed. Not far beyond is the Shelbourne, an 1824 institution among Dublin hotels.

Georgian Perfection

From Baggot St, take Merrion St Upper, where some of Dublin’s finest buildings are located. A string of government buildings and museums and galleries line the street, with the Taoiseach’s building being the pick. I can’t attest to some of the inhabitants being as fine though. Take the entrance into Merrion Square and in its North East corner you’ll find the famed Oscar Wilde statue. Surrounded by some of his most memorable quotes, you’ll also see his house directly across the street.

From here its now time to take in the fine brickwork and doors of the area. Fitzwilliam Street on the west side of the park has its share, but as soon you circle Fitzwilliam Square to the south you will be in your element. Undoubtedly Dublin’s best is adorning the Embassy of Peru. Its in good company on this street too. Leeson Street is on hand to lead us back to Stephens Green and even more fascinating structures. While its a confused blend from very differing times here, there is no doubt its interesting. And there’s even more doors.

Historical Dublin- New Walk for 2021

From Georgian Dublin we jump to historical Dublin and some of its oldest parts. This one starts on Dame Street and charts a path by some of Dublin’s best known historical monuments. It’s an 8 km walk and fully accessible to all from its city centre beginnings. Our loop passes some of Dublin’s biggest tourist attractions on its way to the IMMA before crossing the Liffey and returning. During lockdown it’s an opportunity to see a part of Dublin that’s usually thronged with tourists, in an eerily quiet state. When the good times come roaring back, it’s the perfect tourist walk.

We begin at Trinity College, Dublin’s oldest and premier university and then follow Dame Street to its end. Dame Street is perhaps Dublin’s finest street of architecture, with City Hall and Dublin Castle among the buildings. The street ends with the city’s oldest cathedral and church, in Christ Church Cathedral and St Audoen’s Chapel.

Passing next by Thomas Street and James Street is one of the oldest parts of the modern city. It’s also the home of the Guinness Factory and Storehouse, and a diversion may be called for. Seeing those streets devoid of people now is so unusual. Bow Lane West leads to the entrance to the IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern Art). Closed at the moment, it was once the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, and its grounds are a delight, from the art installations to the superb formal gardens. It also has very helpful bathroom facilities. We leave onto the South Circular Road passing the very historical Kilmainham Gaol.

Historical North Side Dublin

Before we follow our loop back to the city, there is the option to join the Irish National War Memorial Gardens walk mentioned above. However if you stay on track, the Chapelizod bypass will take you past Heuston Station. In Spring it’s decorative fascade is further embellished by blossoms. Divert through Croppies Acre, which is a memorial to the many lives lost during the 1798 rebellion. It’s where the ill fated Anna Livia statue now resides too. To its rear is Collins Barracks, now the National Museum of Ireland for Decorative Arts.

If you still have the legs, continue along the keys to Arran Street, an access point let us do a full lap of the popular Smithfield Square. It’s also the location of the Jameson Distillery. To complete your loop back to Dame Street, rejoin the quays before crossing the Ha’penny Bridge, Dublin’s famed footbridge, and stumble over the cobblestones of Temple Bar.

Street art tour

Dublin has exploded as a street art city in recent years, as both local and international artists have adapted the city as their canvas. The art is found throughout the city, but one particular tour captures the essence of what the art means to the city. The Angiery Camden Tour begins on Dame Street in the city centre, before traversing the back streets of Georges St en route to Liberty Lane and Bernard Shaw, Dublin’s answers to Brick Lane. Working your way south Drury Street, Camden street and Richmond Street all showcase. While only a 4 km route, its distractions will consume your time. Embassy walk Dublin 4

This walk is perfect for those who couldn’t get enough of Georgian Dublin. The 39a or 44 bus travels to Donnybrook, the heart of the exclusive Dublin 4, and our walk will bring us by the two most expensive streets in Ireland in particular. Alight at the Hampton Hotel, an impressive 1830’s Georgian and Regency building. Continue straight to the village of Donnybrook, which was the site of the Donnybrook Fair, a very rowdy by reputation market for many centuries. How things have indeed changed!

The Church of the Sacred Heart just over the Dodder, is our marker to move on to Ailesbury Road. This mile long road is marked by the sheer number of embassies that line it, shacking up in fantastic period houses. Even so, these are bettered again by those on Shrewsbury Road. Keep an eye out for Walford, the house sold for a whopping €58 million in 2006. This really is millionaires row.

Reaching the intersection with Mount Merrion, our jaunt confines to Ballsbridge. You will pass several attractive buildings en route; conference centre the RDS from 1879, and the Clayton Hotel Ballsbridge (which is housed in the Masonic School from 1792) stand out. Following Ballsbridge, cut into Herbert Park, a 1911 addition to the city. Besides the duck pond and bandstand, it is especially attractive in spring time when cherry blossoms line the pathways. Herbert Park Road takes us back to our start point, and the end of this 4 km walk.

South Side Dublin Coastal Walks

Sandymount Beach to Blackrock

Staying in Dublin 4, we can’t overlook Sandymount, the start of two of our walks. Bus number 1 from O’Connell Street should be alighted in Gilford Road, which then leads to Sandymount Strand. Several car parks are available here too, with particularly low parking costs of €0.60 an hour. Be sure to cover the time needed for the walk. Credit cards are accepted in the machines here.

This walk begins with a peaceful stroll along a beachfront. The beach is unusual though, with low tide meaning the water can be a long distance from shore. It makes for some stirring images, especially with the iconic chimneys in the background. Fans of literature will take delight in the beach as being a location of Ulysses. Care should be taken not to get caught behind the water in high tide and one should stay within 100 metres of the promenade.

Into the wild

We leave the beach at Sandymount and follow the road south through Booterstown. On the left is the Booterstown Nature Reserve, a wild bird reserve in the city. It is home to several species including Little Egrets, Kingfishers, curlews and snipe. The reserve has a wall for bird watching. We leave the road behind on our walk and link up with another city park in the form of Blackrock Park. There’s great facilities here for cyclists too, for those who prefer their exercise with wheels. The peaceful park follows the coastline and features a central pond and sculptures.

We then follow an out and back direction to return to Sandymount. The total distance of this walk is 8 km.The good news is there are paid bathroom facilities in Sandymount at the Martello Tower (one of two on the trail), and in Blackrock where both shopping malls have open bathrooms. This flat trail suits everyone.

Poolbeg Lighthouse

One of the very best walks near Dublin is the great south wall. This is in fact one of the longest sea walls in Europe. Our Poolbeg Lighthouse trail extends from the same starting point in Sandymount, over 4 km of sandy headland and the aforementioned sea wall. It passes by the Sandymount towers, and various beaches, all the while enjoying splendid views of the Dublin coastline south as far as Dun Laoghaire, and north to Howth.

During spring and summer wild Valerian flowers take over the grassy headlands and sandbanks of the Irishtown Nature Park and paint a beautiful picture of pink against blue. From here it circles the coastline as far as the south wall. The paved wall, and red lighthouse that marks its end, actually date from 1768. It’s often blustery out here but it’s without a doubt an iconic Dublin experience that can’t be missed.

If you don’t fancy the 11 km there and back route, then there is a car park in Pigeon House Road that will half the distance of your walk. The south wall walk is a bit bumpy owing to its cobbled surface so bear in mind it may not be a comfy ride for wheelchairs or buggies.

Dun Laoghaire

After that view from the Poolbeg Lighthouse, there is no doubt that Dun Laoghaire would be high on anyone’s list. The town itself gives plenty of indicators to its historic past, from its origin in 1816 as another port town for Dublin. Originally called Georgetown, its name was subsequently changed in 1920.

The walk starts from the Dart station on the southbound line, and is altogether a 3 km trail to the end of the east pier. Immediately on the right is Dun Laoghaire County Hall, built in the Lombard Romanesque style in 1879. It looks distinctly Italian, and the town is better for it. Still operating as a ferry terminus, Dun Laoghaire is bustling to this day. We pass by some yacht clubs, before its the long walk along the pier. At the end a lighthouse warns passing ships, but we are also greeted by a Teddy’s ice cream van. An institution in Ireland, you haven’t lived until you’ve had one.

We return via the same route, and there’s the option of taking the west pier (which is back past the train station) to the end for those challenging their daily 10,000 steps. If you’ve worked up a hunger Dun Laoghaire has a sterling reputation for restaurants, and has plenty of excellent options such as Toscano, Hartleys, and Oliveto.

Killiney Hill and Dalkey

Four stops beyond Dun Laoghaire on the Dart and we arrive in Killiney. While Dublin 4 is millionaires row, this area is where we find some of Dublin’s most famous inhabitants. Bono, Enya and The Edge, all call it home, as did Matt Damon during lock-down. With some of Dublin’s best scenery who can blame them.

The walk begins at the station and its 1 km to the top of Killiney Hill, easily distinguished by the Obelisk that tops it. Its recommended to do a full loop of Killiney Hill, and visit Dalkey Quarry, where wildlife is abundant. With the years it has become so overgrown, that its hard to believe its man-made. Proof of this is in the Peregrine falcons, extremely rare in Ireland, who have started to call the crags home. For those driving, Killiney Hill has a free car park which can be used as a starting point for the walk.

The route down to the Vico road by Scalpwilliam, has rousing sights of Bray and Wicklow beyond. Taking this road north we arrive on Coliemore Road, perhaps the most attractive address in the country, as castle-like-houses overlook the sea. Then its on to historic Dalkey, more of which can be read about in my blog on Dalkey Castle and Village. Dalkey train station is on hand to bring you back to the city after this 5 km route, or alternatively you can return to the car park via Dalkey Avenue.

Best Parks for Walks In South Side Dublin

Saint Enda’s Park Dublin

This little spoke of park in the suburb of Rathfarnham deserves some recognition. Ample free parking is provided on both sides of the park, and bus 16 from O’Connell Street drops you outside. The park provides historical and natural attractions and has one of Dublin’s prettiest walks away from the coast. The house at its heart was built in 1780, but now serves as the Pearse Museum. Padraig Pearse one of the leaders of the 1916 rising once ran a school here, and both he and many of his pupils faced execution after the rising. The house can be toured (it is currently closed) as can the formal gardens close by. At the centre of the gardens are the words of “The Wayfarer” emblazoned in stone, the poem written in 1916 by Pearse, as he came to terms with his impending death.

The circular route that encompasses the parks main sights is only 2 km with the distraction of the house above adding to that. But the gardens are distraction enough. The Whitechurch stream flows through wonderful woodland of horse chestnut, willow and cypress, crossed by small fairy-tale bridges. The original owner of the house Edward Hudson, added more enchantment by building follies throughout. These stone structures include castellated towers and the mysterious Odin’s cave. Hudson took influence from various places he had seen in Ireland. It makes for a unique walking experience and the grounds are a great place to leave the city behind in.

Marlay Park

The biggest park on the south side of Dublin is Marlay Park. The park finds fame from the concerts that are held here annually, but for recreational purposes it has no match. Covering an area of 86 hectares, Marlay Park has no end of paths to walk. However one route in particular begins here and it would be bad form to not walk the first small stage of it. The Wicklow Way is Ireland’s oldest long distance route, a 127 km route established in 1980. It is now also part of the E8 European long distance trail, which ends in Turkey.

Marlay Park takes its name from Marlay House built in 1794. At that time the estate was twice the size. The house can be visited by guided tour, and the stables house a craft market. The nearby gardeners house is now a coffee shop, while the adjacent Regency formal gardens date from the 19th century. The formal gardens and house are currently closed.

The walking route

Beginning at the car park our own 4 km walking way is less strenuous. The number 16 bus also passes here as to St Enda’s Park. Following the yellow way-marker of the Wicklow Way we duck into the canopy of trees in the centre of the park. Soon we join a stream, which is crossed several times by delightful bridges. A duck pond and wild flower meadow also add to the aesthetics. At the rear end of the park, we leave the yellow men behind and loop back into the park from the rear entrance.

Keep an eye open for the excellent sculptures in the park, as well as the Dublin society of model engineers, with its railway track and beautiful tower. We rejoin the forest at the Laurelmare Victorian Cottage, before returning to the front of the estate and the house. With a background of the gentle Dublin Mountains behind, the gardens are particularly scenic.

Tymon Park – New Walk for 2021

While a lot of the walks here have been designed to create a circular walk, none do it as naturally as the Tymon Park walk. The route perfectly wanders the park that is split by the M50 motorway. To get there, take bus 54A or 15A from the city centre (when that’s allowed), or alternatively drive to one of its many car parks in Templeogue or Tallaght. Personally I use the car park off Wellington Lane. The park covers an area of 300 acres, is intersected by the river Poddle, has two lakes and a number of woods containing beech, poplar, ash, chestnut, willow, maples, sycamore and birch. The park was once the site of a castle, whose ruins were sadly demolished in 1960. The main attractions of the park now are the park now are several playgrounds, and of course the walks.

The walking route

Our waking route is around 6 km in length and starts at the Wellington Lane Car Park (or any car park you prefer). It passes by the intriguing PACT sculpture before climbing past woodland to the O2 Millennium sculpture. We aim for the overpass of the M50 that keeps us within Tymon Park. Before you cross turn and survey the stunning view of the Dublin Mountains behind. Once on the other side keep on Tymon Lane. This was once a road when the park was farmland prior its opening in 1986. The lane is now perfect for bird-watching with plenty of indigenous species.

In the middle of this section is a visitor centre, now closed, but it does have bathroom facilities which are open during lockdown. A big consideration for some. Leaving the lane, we meet the first of two lakes, crisscrossed by cute bridges. There is plenty of wildfowl in both. Near the end of this section the walk once again gently climbs to once more cross the M50. It’s then another gentle walk past the second of our lakes and a series of playing pitches, before returning to the car park, or bus stop. While there are a few steep small hills, there are no steps throughout, so the walk should be suited for wheelchairs. It’s also ideal for kids, especially with all those playgrounds. Though you may never get them out of them.

Dublin Mountains- Best Hikes in Dublin

Most Dubliners look east to the sea or south to the Dublin mountains when the sun shines brightest in the city. There are a spate of walks in the mountains in Dublin. Even though the Dublin Mountains have a high point of 536 metres at the Fairy Castle, they do provide an excellent recreational area. Many natural forests grow here and Coillte has committed to ensuring more indigenous trees prosper here. Wildlife in the form of foxes, badgers and Sika Deer can be spotted by a keen eye. None of the walking trails listed below are wheelchair friendly unless stated. DublinMountains.ie is an excellent resource to download maps and find more information on the best hikes near Dublin. Dublin Mountain Way

Spanning most of the Dublin Mountains is the Dublin Mountains Way, a 42 km hike from Shankill in the west to Tallaght in the west. The walk is rated as moderate to strenuous with an elevation change of 1140 metres across its route. It can be split into several stages though which extend the route to nearly 80 km when done as loops.

From Shankill it climbs to Barnaslingan and Carrickgollogan woods, before a route that takes it by Glencullen and Johnnie Foxes Pub, the highest in Ireland. Do try the fish. It nest climbs through forests to the Fairy Castle, followed by Tibradden and Cruagh, before the westwards direction continues past the Massey estate. The final stretch is through Bohernabreena, before the descent to Tallaght in Dublin’s west. This walk shouldn’t be attempted without a good level of hiking experience and fitness. But the good news is, it can be completed in short stages on day trips. Which takes us to the best recommendations for hill walking in Dublin.

Carrickgollogan and Barnaslingan Forest Walk

With the 44 bus from O’Connell street to Enniskerry making this walk accessible, its ideal for anyone. There are car parks too at the entrance to both forests. If there’s one thing this 5 km figure 8 loop walk guarantees, its views. Starting on Murphy’s Lane the first loop climbs to the now defunct Ballycorus lead mines, where only the chimney still stands. From here the views down to Dublin Bay are excellent. Hitting the forest trail we come back to our start point via Carrickgollogan woods, before crossing Barnaslingan Forest to the Scalp. This is a narrow glacial valley some 200 metres deep strewn with rocks, and features some feral goats. The view to the south from here take in the Wicklow mountains, and in particular the pointed peak of the great Sugar Loaf.

Fairy Castle & Ticknock Walk

Ticknock Forest and the hike to the Fairy Castle are the most popular in the Dublin Mountains. It is also a huge location for mountain biking. While its easiest reached by car, the determined can take bus 44b there, and alight at Woodside Road, though the 3 km walk in is a real deterrent. There is ample parking in the area for a large amount of hikers. There are trails a plenty heading up into the hills, but the best route to follow is the circular hike that takes in both Two Rock (Fairy Castle) and Three Rock Mountains. It’s a 6 km route, that is quite busy.

The focus is the Fairy Castle, and your reward at the top for completing what is an easy trek, is a bronze age cairn, dating to around 2500 BC. It has collapsed over the millennia, but is still a reminder of the burial customs of our ancient ancestors. The return route passes by the TV masts of Two Rock, and a rather special view down over the city. The trail can also be extended to take in the Ballyedmonduff gallery tomb, and the Newt Pond.

GAP to the Fairy Castle – new walk for 2021

The Fairy Castle in Dublin is such a popular walk that it’s worth including two routes up to its summit. This one begins from the GAP, the Glencullen Adventure Park. It’s more of a mountain biking destination, with a huge number of trails. But there is one hiking trail. The walk is located not far from Johnny Foxes and the lovely village of Glencullen. So keep that in mind for after. You can reach here by bus 44A, though it only runs from Dundrum Luas Station. There is lots of parking onsite, and a fee of €2 is charged to use the facilities. These number a cafe, bathrooms and bike equipment rental.

The GAP to Fairy Castle hike begins in forest, that is zigzagged by bike trails, so caution is needed. In Autumn, the moist conditions under the natural canopy are the perfect breeding ground for all manner of mushroom species, adding an extra dimension to the walk. About halfway through we leave the forest behind, and face an ascent up the mountain. There is a rough trail, but it can be challenging, especially in wet weather, when the trail becomes a small stream. Watch your footing especially on the way down. There are some great rock formations at the summit and the views south to Wicklow are near perfect. Take a break there or at the summit cairn, before following the same trail back. The walk is 6.5 km in length and I’ve included a map below.

Tibradden Walk

This out and back trail is a 5 km out and back walk along some of the best made trail in the mountains. Only reached by car, it begins in Tibradden car park, next to Zipit (an ideal place for those looking to conquer fear of heights). From there the trail climbs to the 467 metres summit. It’s a pleasant route for any hiker, through woodland before reaching the open mountain.There is another cairn to be found here, and this one appears to have a natural entrance, and a rock featuring stone circular carvings to those at Newgrange. However it is believed this was a reconstruction in the 19th century and is not true to the original cairn that once was here.

Cruagh Wood to Glendoo Mountain

While the Cruagh wood walk is only 4 km by following the way marked Sli na Slainte (healthy way), it can be made more challenging by taking the trail to the mountain top at the halfway point. The Cruagh wood walk cuts through forest paths with intermittent views down the Dublin Bay and Howth. It begins from the car park, as the only possible access point. The view from the road side overlooking Dublin is one of the best around.

While following the forest trail, keep an eye out for steps that climb upwards. These turn your forest walk into a hike. They reach open mountain and trails then give options left, right, and centre. Centre will take you to the top of Cruagh Mountain, but the more challenging left one is Glendoo Mountain. It’s a respectable 586 metres, and may be in Wicklow, but lets not bring that up. If climbing in times other than a heatwave, you can expect a very Irish challenge of mud and wet bog before getting to the top. The return route is the same as the ascent, before continuing around Cruagh.

On the route back from Cruagh and Tibradden, The Merry Ploughboy pub is a lively place, with traditional music, and some very fiery chicken wings. Worth a look when it reopens from August 2020. The sunsets from the car park are often as fiery too.

Hell Fire Club

If you list mountains, sunsets, castles, country mansions, hunting lodges and tales of the occult as your requirements for a walk, then the Hell Fire Club is exactly what you need. 30 minutes drive from Dublin will lead you to the car park, that allows you to access the 8.5 km double loop. The walk first traverses the higher Hell Fire Club, before crossing the road and exploring the Massey estate, once the site of a huge country mansion.

Taking in the periphery of Montpelier Hill, and an overlook of Carthy’s Castle, we finally get to the main event which is the Hell Fire club. The shooting lodge here was built in 1725 and can be still fully explored. Legend (or fact) has it that it was used for secret meetings by a mysterious group of men. Unconfirmed are reports of the raising of the devil. What’s undoubted is that it is one of the most haunted buildings in Ireland. Its a beautiful summit to your walk, and if timed well the sunset is a real treat over the Wicklow Mountains beyond. Keep an eye on the closing of the car park though, if this is your intention.

The Massey Estate is quite a different walk, which takes you within the grounds of the old mansion Killakee House. Sadly the house was knocked after it fell into ruins. Left are paths running through the remnants of the gardens and buildings. Again the route is circular and takes into much of the estates best parts. When you make it back to the road, there’s an impeccably cute cafe nearby called the Timbertrove Cafe, which will satisfy your inevitable hunger.

Bohernabreena Reservoir Walk

Running through the Glenasmole Valley, this easy 8.5 km hike takes in a duo of lakes that supply water to the Dublin suburbs of Rathgar and Rathmines. From the car park at the Bohernabreena Waterworks, one walks along the banks of the Dodder River (yes that Dodder), before following the west bank of the two lakes. The reservoirs were completed in 1908. The walk loops around the upper lake, and you can access St Anns graveyard, whose church dates from the 1600’s. As one of the easier walks in Dublin, it is buggy and wheelchair friendly. The views of the lakes are excellent, and deer are easy to spot in the surroundings. After completing the upper lake loop, the path retraces its steps to the parking lot.

Greystones Cliff Walk

You may ask why one of the best walks in Wicklow, would appear on a post about Dublin. This walk has been a favourite of Dublin folk for quite some time. It is also easily reached by the Dart, as Bray and Greystones are the last stops on its route, which makes it accessible for locals and tourists alike, and is the best way to attempt the walk. Stretching between the stations of both towns, the 8 kilometres hug the cliff with some absolutely awesome views.

Above the walk is Bray Head, a 240 metre above sea headland, that is topped by a cross. The walk can be extended to include this. The Greystones cliff walk itself is deemed as easy, but is unsuitable for wheelchairs and buggies. The views of the Irish Sea present the perfect opportunity for whale and dolphin watching, and the skies are alive with gulls, gannets, kittiwakes, and many other species. Peregrine falcons can also be spotted. Ireland only reptile species, the common lizard is often seen basking on sunny days.

After completing one of Ireland’s best walks, you’ll end up in Greystones, a town with a well earned gastro reputation. At its heart is Happy Pear, the vegan success story of the island. You’ll recognise it by the crowds (when they return), bright colours, and the food that will satisfy the most stubborn of carnivores. Summary on the Best Walks in Dublin

It’s important to remember that at present these walks are only open to those living within a 5 km radius of them. Respect of social distancing limits will bring us closer to our goal of leaving coronavirus behind us on the trail of life. To that extent some car park access to the above locations are closed and it is best to always check ahead.

If there’s one walk that’s the perfect day trip from Dublin, then it may well be the Bray to Greystones cliff walk. Adored by generations of all ages, and practically a institution at this stage. Its route travels some of the best scenery of the east coast, past rock faces and the blue Irish Sea. It’s a walk that should be experienced to the fullest. To really live it and enjoy it, read on.

This is not just a mere coastal walk. The two towns that it connects each have their own claim as the more famous in County Wicklow.

Bray’s fame is as a seaside town, one it has had since the 1850’s when the train line was extended. Hotels sprang up, and the stony beach of Bray became famous with holidaymakers for over a century. Towering above the town is Bray Head at the end of the promenade. International travel saw its decline as warmer and sandier climates came into favour. But Bray still retains that seaside charm, as daytrippers descend for its stretch of sea, bars and amusements. The annual Bray airshow is also the premier aviation event in the Irish calendar. It may well be the Brighton of Ireland.

Greystones on the other hand is more modern. It’s fame is firmly centered on its growth over the last few decades as one of the trendiest towns on the east coast. It is the foodie capital of County Wicklow, with a significant number of restaurants for each of its 18000 people. Greystones coastline also features more traditional sandy beaches than those in its counterpart. For this reason it’s the perfect place to end the 8 km trail, though either way can be walked.

The Allure of the Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk

Away from the two prominent towns on each end, we get to the real reason we are here. The cliff walk Bray to Greystones follows one of the most scenic coastal routes in Ireland’s east. The walk is the perfect summer’s day activity for those looking to escape the city, and is suited for all with a moderate fitness level. Those looking for a greater challenge can combine it with the more vertical Bray Head Cliff Walk. Besides the magnificent views over the Irish Sea, the trail provides one of the best opportunities to see some of Ireland’s marine life. Dolphins, Porpoises and Basking Sharks can all be spotted in the sparkling waters below.

Directions to Bray

The walk can be attempted from either direction, but is somewhat easier to follow by moving south. The proper way to do the walk is using the DART, the light rail system running from North to South through Dublin and finishing in Greystones. City centre train stations include Connolly, Tara Street, and Pearse Street. This 30 minute journey isn’t just about getting from A to B, it’s an experience in itself. Hugging the coast in its latter parts near Bray, it’s Ireland’s finest train journey, with rousing views. Following the walk the train is usually taken back from Greystones’ Church Road that runs through the heart of the town. Should you wish to do the cliff walk from Greystones to Bray, it is the last stop on the route.

Travelling by car to Bray is an alternative option. However it should be noted that in summer and at weekends, that approach roads to the town are often heavily backlogged. The journey from Dublin can easily take an hour if not more. As long as you are prepared for that, it’s a 20 km journey from Dublin along the N11. Junction 5 leads to Bray north and signage (and the traffic) will lead you from there. There is a significant number of parking spaces in the town, particularly along the promenade and near Bray Head. keep an eye on the signage where you park, some zones offer 2 hours free parking, and additional hours are charged at between €0.30 and €1.

Some Facts about the Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk

• The price of an all day return ticket to Bray from Dublin’s Connolly station is €6.75.
• There is a large car park all along Bray’s promenade with very modest all day pricing rates
• The trail is about 8.5 km in length one way to Greystones
• The walk time from Bray to Greystones is generally around 2 hours and the elevation gain is around 180 metres.
• The walk is perfect for families. Some younger kids may bemoan the length though. There are steps at times, which make it unsuitable for wheelchairs.
• Hiking boots aren’t essential, but a good pair of sports shoes is recommended. The trail can be muddy in places.
• Bring water, snacks, a waterproof jacket (it is Ireland), sunscreen, and your camera
• One of the highlight of the trail is the wildlife. As well as Dolphins, Black Harbour Porpoises and Basking Sharks, common lizards (Ireland’s only reptile) can be seen sunning themselves on the rock faces.
• Sea birds whose habitat is the Irish east coast include Fulmars, Cormorants, and Terns.
• The best months to experience the Cliff walk are May through October, but it is possible to do year round. .
• Remember to leave no trace.

Step by Step on the Bray to Greystones Walk

We travelled by DART from the south suburbs of Dublin. Bray is a busy town even in the midst of a pandemic so its best to come prepared for that, even in summer. As you arrive in Bray, an alleyway running by some small shops then takes you towards the promenade. If you need a bit of caffeine to set you up for the walk then I have to recommend CarpeDiem Coffee and wine bar. Of course if you want to start with some wine I can happily recommend that too.

Bray Promenade runs for 1 km along the sea front, and besides that aforementioned stony beach there’s much more to look at. A stretch of green takes you towards Bray Head passing a beautiful bandstand and colourful beach huts. If you are doing the walk in reverse towards Bray, pubs such as Wilde Bar and the Martello Bar have beer gardens opening out onto Bray seafront. The Wilde bar is part of the Strand Hotel which was once the home of Oscar Wilde.

If you simply want to cool down, Teddy’s Ice Cream is on hand. Teddy’s is an institution on the east coast, and their 99 is an experience that must be had if you are only visiting Ireland. The mildly pleasing Sea Life Bray Aquarium might help if you failed to spot any marine life out on the sea.

Bray Head

The cliff walk from Bray to Greystones starts nearly directly at the end of the promenade. To the right the optional trail up Bray Head features a stiff climb over rough terrain. The reward for those taking this route is the wide ranging views from Bray Head Cross over the Wicklow Mountains National Park and Dublin. This is as close as it gets to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Ireland. Nearby is the Raheen-A-Cluig church from the 12th century, a place with its own unique history of smugglers, ghosts and healing wells.

The Cliff Walk

After a mild increase in elevation, the path begins. It runs along the same path as the railway, with a winding trail hugging the edge of the cliff. The railway line was designed by Brunel, the famed engineer, and opened in 1856. For all Brunel’s mastery though, the track suffered some tunnel collapses due to coastal erosion and had to move further inland. One of the collapsed tunnels can still be seen. In 1867 the collapse claimed two lives. The trail demands little of you, so you get to focus your attentions on enjoying the views, and hopefully spotting playful dolphins or lounging lizards.

All along the way a carpet of seasonal wildflowers lines the path. There are more distractions en-route too. The vantage points of the train whizzing past below. The ruined redbrick remains of the Lord Meath Lodge. This was built at the time the coastal path opened, as the trail was said to cross the lands of Killruddery house, the domicile of William Barbazon aka Lord Meath. The lodge served as a toll house and one penny was charged from everyone who walked the trail beyond the point. Now its mostly in ruins besides a gable and a stairs that climbs to a higher vantage point.

Not far from this point is a little inlet known as the Brandy Hole, used by smugglers to land. Reputedly there was a cave which they used to bring in goods inland, but it no longer exists.

Greystones

The final stretch of the walk approaches Greystones. The land flattens to be surrounded by meadows which shine golden in the summer sun. Urban development does take some of the gloss off the walk in this section, as tall wire fences lead you towards Greystones Marina. Below the sands of Greystones North Beach are a tempting distraction on the warmest of days.

Greystones Harbour Marina is a welcome sight as you approach the town. It’s not exactly clear where to go from this point, and two options present, the first along the Marine Road, and then by La Touche Road and Place to Church Road. A shorter option is up Trafalgar Road to Church Road. From here its a short walk to the train station.

Where to Eat in Greystones

Of course, you don’t want to leave Greystones in a hurry. The place is foodie heaven. The first stop if you haven’t been has to be the Happy Pear, one of the greatest Irish culinary success stories. Bring vegetarian food to the masses is their greatest achievement. Even the most carnivorous among us (ME) was blown away by their offerings. However if meat is a must, The Hungry Monk, Bochelli, the Fat Fox are just a few suggestions. Whatever your preference of cuisine, Greystones is up to the task.

If you arrive with a sweet tooth La Creperie Pierre Grise in the Harbour might be just the answer. As we discovered on the end of our walk in 2020. Its crepes are fluffy and iced coffees really hit the spot after all the exertions.

What Else to do Near Bray and Greystones

Having already piqued your curiosity about the greedy landlords that presided over the trail in the 19th century, its only fair I recommend a visit to Killruddery House. One of Ireland’s finest paladin mansions, its even better than the nearby Powerscourt in this writers opinion. The 17th century gardens are a thing of beauty, and its many features include weekend markets, a farm shop, and a café. The gardens are modeled on the gardens at Versailles. One of its most unique features is a Sylvian theater, a natural amphitheater.

Tours run during the summer of the house which is still occupied by the current Lord Meath and his family. They recently celebrated 400 years in the house. A walk through is a fascinating walk through opulence and their history. The glass house is the tours center point, which was inspired after a visit to the magnificent, but now only a memory Crystal Palace in London.

Where to Stay Near the Bray or Greystones Cliff Walk

While Bray and Greystones might not be traditionally considered overnight destinations, they do have a few options available. Generally when one stays in Wicklow it is to enjoy views of the countryside. The history of the Strand Hotel in Bray shades it on its counterparts, while in Greystones hotels are more sparse, with the Glenview Hotel and Druids Glen in nearby Newtown Mount Kennedy the closest purveyors of fine luxury.

But don’t let that lead you to the assumption that it is an easy climb. Despite the large numbers that tackle the mountain, it’s not one to be taken lightly. It’s a constant and difficult climb despite its short length, and the latter half is over loose stone and shingle. That poses a bigger challenge on the way down as even the most goat like are likely to lose their footing on the shingle.

Remember the mountain welcomes you, you don’t conquer the mountain. Every year there are a significant number of mountain rescue callouts. In August of 2020 a climber died on the slopes after a fall. On average around 20 people are treated for falls by mountain rescue every Reek Sunday. On the day I climbed, I witnessed a heavily bandaged climber coming down the mountain, who had sustained a head injury also. It’s highly important to come fit, prepared and with the right gear also.

History of Croagh Patrick

Croagh Patrick has been a site of pilgrimage for over 3000 years. Pagans would ascend the mountain to light fires during celebratory times. Presumably Halloween would have been a lively place on that hill. However it only really gained real prominence as a pilgrimage site, when St Paddy himself climbed the mountain, and spent the 40 days of lent here. He didn’t even get a reprieve on the 17th March (an Irish tradition where we can forget what we gave up for a day, and all go to the pub). It’s even told that this is how Saint Patrick rid the snakes from Ireland.

Directions to Croagh Patrick

Croagh Patrick is located in Murrisk on the R335 route which follows the Wild Atlantic Way, which is in fact 8 km from the nearby large town of Westport in County Mayo. It is 230 km from Dublin and 92 from Galway. There is a regional bus service which runs from Westport to Louisburgh. Take bus 450 from Westport bus station. Westport is also serviced by trains from Dublin.

Some Facts about climbing Croagh Patrick

• There is a large car park at the foot of Croagh Patrick. This is a paid car park, so remember to bring some coins for the machine. Charges are €4 and the gift shop here won’t give coins without a purchase also. This is how I ended up owning some Croagh Patrick postcards
• There are 3 pilgrimage days in the year, Reek Sunday, Garland Friday, and also the Feast of the Assumption of our Lady on 15th August
• Croagh Patrick is 765 meters above sea level
• Croagh Patrick in fact has its own website with a lot of worthwhile information – Croagh Patrick.
• There is a Croagh Patrick visitor centre called Teach na Miasa near the car park. It was in fact opened by the director of archaeological excavations on the mountain. The centre provides information on the mountain, the local area in Mayo, has a craft shop, and also sells climbing aids, and souvenirs. There is also a café on-site. The centre was closed for much of 2020 due to restrictions and shall remain closed in early ’21.
• The out and back Pilgrim trail is 7.6 km to the top of Croagh Patrick
• The elevation gain is around 750 meters, which is in fact considerable for the length
• Croagh Patrick hike time is around 3 hours 30 minutes altogether
• The final ascent of the mountain is quite rugged and stoney so caution is recommended. Teens will enjoy it, but it would be too difficult for younger kids
• Hiking boots are highly recommended due to the rocky terrain and it really shouldn’t be attempted without hiking poles. Walking sticks (staffs) are available for sale at the visitor centre and shop also. They are undoubtedly a godsend for the treacherous way back down
• Bring water, snacks, a waterproof jacket (it is Ireland), sunscreen, a first aid kit, and a map also
• The best months to climb Croagh Patrick are March through October. The weather can vary here on any day, so its best to be prepared for sun, fog, or rain.
• The trail is available on alltrails.com
• Remember to leave no trace.

Step by Step on the Croagh Patrick hike

Climbing Croagh Patrick was top of my hiking wish list for 2020, and when the opportunity arose in September to travel anywhere in Ireland, I grasped it with both hands. I arrived in Murrisk around 11 am, and was disappointed to see the famous mountain shrouded in a thick veil of fog. Besides the challenge of the climb, Croagh Patrick is known for the panoramic views it gives over Clew Bay, where a scattering of green islands contrast against the sea.

Parking in the large car park, the ascent begins at the statue of St Patrick. This was built in 1928 by a Reverend Father Peterson, who had collected money in America, for the rebuilding of a church in Westport. Obviously, the generosity exceeded that hoped for.

From here the trail begins with a series of stones and rocks, running alongside a rough stream. The trail is always obvious, but if there is ever a doubt, simply follow those in front of you. Immediately it’s a test of fitness because it’s all uphill from here. This section provides the best views of Clew Bay, as the elevation increases. Although it is a pandemic year there was still a good volume of people attempting the climb. The sheer age difference really surprised me. I latched onto a Galway Gal called Deirdre, a marathon runner who had turned to hiking in 2020, and we climbed together.

The Middle Section

The trail then levels off somewhat after about 1.5 km and leads you into a false sense of security. You wonder what all the fuss is about. You even imagine you could probably have done this barefoot! Incidentally it was at this time I witnessed someone barefoot, who I kindly asked if I could take a picture of his feet. For the record, that’s the first time I’ve ever asked a stranger that.

On this level there are public toilets and a stone oratory that is said to date to between the 5th and 9th century.

Walking Barefoot

The tradition of walking barefoot is a sign of penance and atonement on the trail. Some do it in remembrance of a lost loved one. Walking over the stones is said to be good for the soul. However it has been advised of late to not do it, as the path has significantly degraded over the past few decades due to traffic.

The Final Ascent of Croagh Patrick

This part presents your real challenge. The scree on the trail is strewn all the way across the path. There are supposedly plans to upgrade the trail with a better path, but perhaps that would take some of the challenge of the pilgrimage away. For now this is the only way to tackle the pilgrims trail. It is arduous over that last kilometer ascent, trying to find stable footing. It can only be imagined that this is where most accidents occur, and notably a considerable distance from the ground for mountain rescue.

The summit is the site of a church from where mass is celebrated on pilgrimage days. The church was built in 1905 by 12 local men, from stones found on the mountain side. When we finally reached the top the fog was still shrouding everything below, and around us. There is a large area atop the mountain, so its easy to relax and take a well deserved break. You can also capture your achievement by taking a photo behind the Croagh Patrick sign.

Fortunately luck was clearly on our side and the fog started to lift below us then. The view over Lough Nacorra was indeed one of the best I’ve seen all year. Proof that its good to keep the faith on the most faithful of Irish walks.

The descent

The descent of the scree filled part was undoubtedly as difficult as the way up. With upward climbers on the clearer paths, we were forced to drift to the rougher stones to give way. Social distancing is also a consideration. I first hand learned how easy it is to slip on the scree. Fortunately my backpack broke the fall. Even mountain goats fall sometimes, don’t they? Take care. Once past this area the descent should be relatively easy. Looking back however, I doubt I will ever attempt this arduous trail again. Other things to do at Croagh Patrick

Across the road from Croagh Patrick is the National Famine Monument in Murrisk. Dating from 1997, the sculpture by John Behan depicts a coffin ship. Coffin ships, as they became known, were used to transport people to America and Canada, during the Irish famine of 1845-1849. Many died on the crossing, and the Irish famine is regarded as the greatest disaster to befall the world during the 19th century. The sculpture is startling, as ghastly skeletons surround the side of the ship. Nearby are the 15th century ruins of Murrisk Abbey also.

Where to stay near Croagh Patrick

Westport is the largest town near Croagh Patrick, and also the perfect local base for exploring the county of Mayo. It’s an incredibly vibrant town, with an excellent nightlife in particular. It’s at home hosting Irish stag and hen parties, as much as tourists. Add a great selection of restaurants and hotels, and there’s no real need to look any further. Guided walking tours of Croagh Patrick can also be booked in Westport.

Where to eat near Croagh Patrick

Westport has a vast number of pubs and restaurants all serving quality Irish and international cuisine. As I had a long drive ahead of me, I sought a quick option. Chilli Coffee Shop on Westport’s main street thus fit the bill. A big mug of cappuccino and a carbs and iron stuffed steak sandwich were undoubtedly the perfect antidote for my hike hunger.

The two routes to the summit of Djouce mountain are part of the Wicklow Way hiking route, that also cuts a path from south Dublin, through Wicklow to the county of Carlow. Being the first long distance trail in Ireland, it thus means you are guaranteed a well marked trail, with good paths or railway sleeper pathways.

Crone Woods to Djouce Mountain

As I said there are two distinct routes, but both are quite some distance apart. The first Djouce Mountain walk, from Crone Woods is certainly the more difficult hike. Crone Woods is located about 30 kilometres from Dublin, and about 7 from the nearest town of Enniskerry. Follow the signs for the Powerscourt Waterfall, but ignore the turn off. After a few kilometres of narrow country roads with excellent views of Dublin’s Three Rock Mountain, the car park will then be on your left.

Some Facts about Crone Woods to Djouce Mountain

• There is parking at Crone Woods, which is located close to the Powerscourt Waterfall.
• Neither walking route is served by public transport
• Car parking is free but be vigilant that the car park closes at different times throughout the seasons
• The out and back walk from Crone Woods to Djouce Mountain is 14 km, with a route climbing above Powerscourt Waterfall.
• Elevation gain is around 810 metres, and the trail is rated difficult.
• The walk should take around 4 hours to complete, including breaks.
• There is an option to extend the walk to take in Maulin which would then take the trek to 17.5 km
• Some wildlife in the area include sika red deer, pine martens, mountain hares and birds such as red grouse, merlin, and curlew.
• Hiking boots are recomended due to the differing terrain and I recommend poles too.

Step by Step on the Crone – Djouce Route

The walk begins in the surroundings of the Crone Woods. Follow the yellow maymarkers of the Wicklow Way, in order to climb out of the woods into the higher areas above. Wicklow’s most distinguishable peak the Great Sugar Loaf will soon form your view. Continuing the zigzag path, the view suddenly opens out to encompass the Powerscourt Valley below. The benches here give you a chance to take a break, or indeed to simply sit and admire Ireland’s highest waterfall at 121 metres from far above.

But that 14 km wont walk itself so best not to leave it too long. The walk continues to ascend the rim of the aforementioned valley, and the view never becomes dull. Finally it reaches a summit, and a fork in the path. Right leads to the previously mentioned Maulin, and left is our route marked again by the yellow arrows and men on sign posts. Now presents the first real challenge of the hike. The Glensoulan Valley in front is the only way to Djouce and the path descends and ascends through it. It’s not so difficult on the way out, but it’s a real challenge on the way back. It’s a stunning remote valley though, with the river that feeds the Powerscourt waterfall snaking through its heart.

The Ascent of Djouce

Once you’ve overcome that challenge, the walk crosses a stile and in the direction of Djouce Woods. There is an option to do a Djouce Powerscourt hike from those woods known as the Djouce Deerpark Walk, but then you wouldn’t have the challenge of the Glensoulan Valley would you. One final turn on the trail takes the path onto open mountain. From here its a relentless hike uphill to the base of the Djouce peak. Of course the mountain thrown one last obstacle in the form of a steep climb to its summit. Throw in the high winds* that are common here, and you’ll definitely have earned the award of conquering this mountain. Those large rocks and trig point at the top are indeed a welcome sight.

*A note on Djouce Mountain weather. I climbed Djouce on a day that had 37 Km winds. While that’s nothing significant on ground level, it’s a whole other proposition on a mountain top. I couldn’t stand at the summit and only my hiking poles kept me upright on my accent. Take note of the winds before attempting exposed mountain tops such as Djouce.

The way back

Continue the trail down side of Djouce before linking back up with the Wicklow way below, and setting out on the route back. There is lots of ample shelter here if the summit was as tumultuous as the day I scaled it though. As this is an out and back loop, the same route is followed back. Trust me that’s definitely no bad thing, this is a sumptuous part of the Irish countryside, with green mountains or the blue sea frequently forming your backdrop. Once you’re past the tough ascent in the Glensoulan Valley, then you can happily add this to your list of conquered Irish peaks. You can follow my route via the alltrails Djouce Mountain map below.

Lough Tay (Guinness Lake) to Djouce Mountain

This hike offers a substantially different aspect than the first walk. It’s also substantially easier despite being of a similar length. The access point to the walk is from Lough Tay, popularly known as Guinness Lake. This is located on the R759, some 44 kilometres from Dublin, or about an hours drive. The trail offers some remarkable views of one of Ireland’s prettiest lakes.

Some Facts about Guinness Lake to Djouce Mountain

• There are several parking lots above Guinness Lake, at the Ballinastoe Car Park, JB Malone Car Park, and the Pier Gates Car park, the latter of which is only opened at the weekend.
• This nearest public transport is 5km away in Roundwood, so driving here is best.
• Car parking is free throughout the year.
• The out and back walk from the Pier Gates to Djouce Mountain is 12 km with truly amazing views of Guinness lake.
• Elevation gain is around 650 metres, and the trail is rated moderate
• The walk should take about 3 hours 30 minutes to complete, with breaks.
• The trail is family and pet friendly.
• There is an option to extend the walk to take in War Hill a peak of 738 metres which would then take the trek to 15 km
• Some wildlife in the area include sika red deer, pine martens and birds such as red grouse, merlin, and curlew.
• Hiking boots are recomended but the trail could be completed in trainers in dry weather. Hiking poles really help with the final climb too.

Step by Step from Lough Tay to Djouce Mountain

As it was the weekend I used the Pier Gates Car Park. Interestingly this is closed during the week, and used by the production crew of the Vikings TV show. It’s currently a hive of activity as they are in fact filming the new spinoff Vikings: Valhalla. A look down at the lake below will give you a view of the set, with the requisite long boats in fact moored at the wooden piers. A telephoto lens or binoculars will really help.

We are here to hike though. It is suggested to park at this car park or alternatively the Ballinastoe one. At the latter car park the trail begins, with a path climbing up into the Ballinastoe forest. It’s a part of the trail not to be missed, as it features one of the most iconic images of Irish woodland walking. The boardwalk through the forest has a wonderful fairytale like quality.

Soon you emerge on the open mountain of the Wicklow Mountains National Park. It’s hard not to follow the paths back down for views of the lake below (as I did), but keep pushing as the panorama further on is even better. Take aim for the J.B. Malone memorial. It’s little more than a rock, but its location is a fitting testimony to the man who dreamed to create the Wicklow Way. Is there a better view in Irish mountains? The lake undoubtedly gets its name from its resemblance to a pint of the black stuff. The water is made all the darker by the sharp rise of Luggala Mountain above it. Beyond the hills roll off into the distance, as beautiful a melody of colours as you could possibly ask for in Ireland.

To White Hill and Djouce

The Djouce boardwalk then extends all the way from here to the foot of the mountain. On its way it passes White Hill, another peak with a height over 600 metres. From here the views sweep down to the Irish Sea, with the distinguishable Bray Head. Despite the distance the trail thus far is relatively easy, and many families with their pets are a common sight. The only difficult part is when the boardwalk terminates and the trail pushes up the side of Djouce. Trust me i was thankful for my hiking poles. On returning down another climber asked me to name my price for them. Any price!! It’s only about 500 metres of an ascent though, which makes it markedly easier than the first trail.

Being an out and back trail can often mean that the return route can border on boring. It’s not the case with this hike though. The better views are on the way back, as they open before you. Save that picnic for around the J.B. Malone Memorial and take that view as you lasting imprint of this hike.

Traditionally this route featured a gruelling 600 steps route just to reach the top of the Spinc ridge. In those days it was a quiet walk, with many put off by that. But those days are no more. Obviously those in power knew that they had a great asset on their hands and so 2020 saw the building of a zigzag path, in place of the stairs. It has opened up the walk to many. It is still a 10 km hike though so don’t think it’s made it easy. I would edge towards moderate.

How to get to Glendalough

Glendalough is located 68 km from Dublin city centre, and the fastest route there takes 1h 10m via the N11, before turning onto the R755 at Kilmacanogue. From there it’s a straight route to Glendalough. A far more scenic but time consuming route follows the Military Road across the Wicklow Mountains.

Glendalough is served by St Kevin’s bus service which leaves from St Stephens Green Dublin at 1130 daily. It arrives in Glendalough at 1250. The last bus back is at 1650 so you better get your skates on when you get there. To better enjoy the area, and with more time, shack up in one of the excellent accommodation choices in nearby Laragh such as the Wicklow Heather of the Tudor Lodge B&B. Then take the 7am or afternoon bus back the following day. The bus costs €20 return.

Some Facts about the Spinc Glendalough

• There is parking at both the upper and lower lake in Glendalough. The lower lake parking is free but will add over 3 km, as the green road walk had to be followed to the route. The upper lake car park costs €4.
• The lower lake is also the location of the monastic site which was settled for several centuries from the 6th onwards. There is also the Glendalough Hotel, and some craft stalls, while the upper lake features a number of food stalls for hungry hikers. More at Glendalough.ie.
• The looped walk is 10 km, climbing the Glendalough Spinc first then travelling out into the Glenealo Valley and returning via the miners village
• With social distancing a major factor you should only attempt the trail clockwise starting via the Poulanass Waterfall
• The elevation gain is around 450 metres,
• The walk should take around 3 hours to complete
• There are steep edges on the Spinc so caution is recomended. Teens will enjoy it, but it might be difficult for younger kids
• Some wildlife in the area include sika red deer, goats, mountain hares, pine martens and birds such as red grouse, jays, and ravens.
• Hiking boots are recomended due to the rocky terrain in the Glenealo Valley and I recommend poles too.
• Bring water, snacks, a waterproof jacket (it is Ireland), sunscreen, and a map and compass

• There are many other walks available in the area should you want to come back. Trust me, you will.

Step by Step on the Glendalough White Route

The trail begins from the upper lake car park, now led by all the social distancing signs. The walk follows the route of the Wicklow Way, climbing up through woodland past the Poulanass Waterfall. This area is particularly aesthetic, with the narrow falls, and the passive river that’s feeds it. It’s worth going off trail to appreciate it.

Keep an eye on the signs for the white Route, as it switches back now. What follows would have been the most challenging part, but those steps are no more. Imagine climbing in excess of those 528 steps of London’s St Paul’s Cathedral, and all at the start of the hike. Thankfully it’s now a series of switchbacks.

Once you get past this (which is a bit unsightly as the vegetation has yet to grow around it) you’ll reach the spinc boardwalk. And the views. The lakes below are a sublime sight, with the upper lake in particular being your main view. From it, the Glenealo River serpentines away into its eponymous valley. There are numerous photo opportunities along the way here, and the views get better as you progress. At this point there is the option of the blue route, which halves the length of the hike and veers off into the forest. Keep going it’s worth it.

Glenealo Valley and miners village

The boardwalk sweeps down from the Spinc into the Glenealo Valley, before crossing the river. From here the walk takes on a new lease of life, following a rocky path by the river side. The flowing water and the ruins of a mining village become the new focus. Mining of lead took place here for over 200 years, before finally coming to a stop in 1957. There are many buildings scattered along the Glenealo Valley and some old mining equipment too. The area took on the name Van Diemen’s Land (the old name of modern day Tasmania), due to the remoteness of its location. When they miners departed, they left behind a herd of goats, Nowadays those goats still run wild here.

The descent from this point is a little tricky underfoot, as the path is strewn with stones. Hiking poles and boots were very welcome and trainers would render it difficult. We noticed some others struggling.

As if that wasn’t enough the walk finally passes a glacial debris field before reaching the upper lake. Strewn with large boulders, it’s perfect for anyone looking to take up bouldering. Finally the tree lined road by the upper lake returns you to the car park.

Pro Tip for the Spinc Glendalough

My pro tip for the Spinc doesn’t have anything to do with the Spinc. It’s a well marked route, and nothing poses and particular difficulty. Instead my pro tip is for when you finish. Skip those food trucks and get back on the road. A few kilometres back towards Laragh is the Wicklow Heather, a gastropub without comparison in this region. With plenty of outdoor seating, it’s perfect for the year we are in. The food is the wholesome Irish plate you need after your hike. But the real surprise here, is the Irish Writers Room, with a collection of first editions from Joyce, Stoker and Swift among many others. Ask for a table here if you can.

Laragh is also a great base for other hiking adventures in the area.

The area surrounding is part of the Wicklow Mountains National Park. One of six Irish national parks, it covers an area of 220 square kilometres. Lough Bray is 24 km from Dublin city, on the border of County Wicklow, and an easy trip for anyone from the city. The lakes are reached by following the R137 from Dublin as far as Terenure. From there you continue onto the R114 to Rathfarnham. At the Yellow House Pub (pubs are always good for Irish directions- you can’t miss it, it’s a yellow pub) turn to the 115. Follow this all the way into the mountains and you can’t go wrong.

Some facts about the Lough Bray Loop

• Lough Bray is located 24 km from Dublin’s city centre on the R115 mountain gap.
• It is not served by public transport.
• There is parking at the trailhead in the Wicklow Mountains, but it is recomended to park at the Glencree Centre.
• The looped walk is 6.5 km or 9 km depending on whether you take that advice
• The Lough Bray Loop is rated moderate to hard due to the boggy terrain, steep sides, and lack of a proper marked trail
• The elevation gain is around 300 metres
• Some wildlife in the area include red deer, and birds that nest in upland bog such as red grouse, snipe, curlew and skylark.
• Don’t take the kids or pets along due to the steep edges on the rim
• Hiking boots are essential due to wet terrain and I recommend poles too.
• Bring water, snacks, a waterproof jacket (it is Ireland), sunscreen, and a map and compass

Step by Step on the Lough Bray Loop

I started my hike by arriving at the small car park at a quarry opposite the lakes. As I kitted out I was approached by a helpful group of hikers in possession of some good advice. Along the lines of “don’t park there, cars regularly get broken into”.

Was this to be the end of the hike so? Thankfully for this blog, no. Their advice also suggested to backtrack to the Glencree Visitor Centre, where hikers are welcome to park.

Bear in mind this is what will increase your hike from 6.5 km to 9 km as it includes a long walk along the road back to the visitor centre.

Preferring my car windows intact over any possible blisters I backtracked. I set out walking from Glencree back along the road. I was armed with advice on how to get up the trail too. Keep an eye out for the three signs together, and push up through the ferns beyond. I found these half a kilometer along the road.

From here it’s an elevation gain as you climb to 550 metres above sea level and the rim above the lakes. While the path is rough and wet, it’s still a clear and worn route to the top. You intersect with the other path from the quarry car park as you near the top. It’s advisable not to lose the bottom part of your hiking pole without realising it halfway up too (as yours truly did), as going back to fetch it doesn’t make the hike any easier.

Lower Lake

When you reach the top of the lower lake the challenge doesn’t end here. While the path mostly levels off, it’s still as rough as before. The new challenge comes in the drop from the sides, one that will test anyone with a fear of heights.

But those views. The views more than make it all worthwhile. They continue all along the rim above the lower lake, before meeting a small crag of granite known as Eagles Crag. Perhaps it’s known for its eagles but i didn’t meet any on that day. Those looking to shorten the walk can do so here, but it’s a very steep descent down that I wouldn’t fancy.

Upper lake and descent

Once more the path climbs up over the upper lake, with the peak of Kippure Mountain your view to the right. Just when you thought the view couldn’t get any better, it does with a vista over both lakes. Again expect a path that hugs the rim, with hair raising drops to the lake below.

As you descend from the top the path enters an open bog. I’ll be honest I lost the trail here. It just seemed to vanish, around the same time it started to rain. However there was only one direction it could go so I followed my instinct and eventually found it after ten minutes. Do take care in the bog, you can lose a boot in the wet ground or even a whole leg down one of the cracks that often appear in it. Again I’m speaking from past experience.

The path afterwards is quite clear and straightforward. It final crosses a stream before meeting the road, just south of that quarry. If I had taken a risk with the car I would be home dry, but instead it was 2.5km along the road for me. The road is not heavily trafficked so it’s not particularly dangerous to walk on.

Glencree Visitor Centre

As I returned to the Glencree Visitor Centre, I deemed it only polite to return the favour of allowing hikers to use the car park, and so dined in their Armoury Cafe. Besides I was starving, and severely caffeine defficint. A spinach and feta cheese quiche served with chips and a large cappuccino and I was back to myself.

The visitor centre is worth visiting for more than just the food. For such a remote location it has an excellent story behind it. Originally founded as a British barracks to hunt Irish in the wake of the 1798 rebellion, it then served as a reform school, an orphanage and a prison during the world wars. While much of the site is now in ruins, there is an exhibition, and the Glencree centre for peace and reconciliation runs from here, looking to help repair relations in war torn areas around the world. On the grounds are a church and a grotto also.

Glencrees most unusual find though is a German war cemetery located nearby. It’s worth stretching those tired legs once more to descend through the grotto of Glencree and pass over to the cemetery, to take in an unusual and unexpected piece of wartime history. Pro Tip

If you can time your walk just right, so you are coming home in the evening, you can catch the sunset on the Sally Gap. It’s one of the most glorious areas on the east coast to watch the days final showdown. There is parking along the road to jump out and enjoy and the sheep will provide the perfect foreground subject if you can get close enough to them.

Dublin and Wicklow are a paradise for hikes and walks. With a stunning coastline, and a considerable amount of uplands, there’s something for everyone. Colmar is located in the east of France, in the region of Alsace. It borders Germany, and was in fact part of Germany for some time in the aftermath of the Franco- Prussian wars. The end of World War I saw it annexed again, and after a brief uprising settling to its present day status as part of France. This was a struggle that dated from the earlier stages of Alsace, and this history is important in understanding the architectural evolution of this fine city.

My top 50 Photos of Colmar

It’s not that all roads in Colmar lead to Le Petite Venise (or little Venice), it’s just that most visitors paths lead there first. Therefore it’s a good place for me to start! For more on the charms of this area you can in addition check out the local Colmar website.

Little Venice

A tour of little Venice is best began at Boulevard St Pierre, and its quaint little bridge. It overlooks the start of the area, and also the Promenade En Barque, which is the perfect place to take a leisurely boat ride. The flowers and the boats completely add to the romance of the location. I’m sure some men have dropped to their knee right here.

Little Venice is best known by the view on Rue Turenne, and it’s the first formal introduction to those multi coloured timber houses. If you are looking for an insta-popular photo, then this is the place. We fell into that trap too, as soon as 45000 people moved out of the way. Follow the streets and the La Lauch river to the Marche Couvert (the covered market), for even more idyllic river shots.

Colmar has an embarrassment of rich architecture and none more so than along the Lauch.

We couldn’t resist the urge to see Colmar from the water, and the boat ride through the town was a relaxing way to soak up its sights. The gondolier shares a little history en-route, but it’s mostly just for pleasure. The buildings reflecting on the water in the evening were a marvel to witness.

Back streets of Colmar

As with any city I advise to leave the centre, and therefore discover the true heart of any location. Colmars side streets are peaceful and above all are an ideal way to see local life. It’s here too you will get to see the many varied houses which make up the city. In other words, the real reason why you came to Colmar.

Colmar’s Houses

The Alsatian architecture is distinctive, it’s timber framed houses with clay roof tiles and wooden window shutters, contrasts against its colourful flower pots. The mix is brought into harmony by the colours that the timber frames are painted. The style is predominantly Germanic. This is a collection of my favourites.

Other notable beauty in Colmar

Colmar is more than just a collection of pretty streets and finely built houses. Beneath the surface a cultural heartbeat is prevalent.
